Product reviews...
I've never been a moisturiser sort of chap, but I guess as one gets older, the skin starts to dry out and feel a little more leathery and one feels obliged to do something about it - especially when the wife starts making cracks about one's age.
The moisturiser fits into my daily regime quite easily - shave, aftershave and a splattering of moisturiser over the drier parts of the face. It didn't take too many days to notice the difference after having used it. My skin felt softer fairly quickly despite only ever using this on the so-called T-zone (the things you learn about from women!).
The cream absorbs quite quickly into the skin, without leaving a white sheen that makes one look quite cadaverous - so another bonus over other creams. I will never be a regular moisturiser user, however I will use it either when I remember to use it or if I am drying out like an old prune.
After using the Face Scrub the packaging recommends that you use either the Moisturiser or the Face Balm. My husband decided to try the Moisturiser first and save the Face Balm for his next shave. One thing my husband really liked about this Moisturiser is that on application it didn't make his skin feel greasy as a lot of moisturisers have in the past. Even ten minutes later there is still no greasy feeling to his skin as a result which has made him very happy.
We often find with a lot of creams and moisturisers that there is usually a strong and lingering smell to the product, which isn't that great when it's on your face, right under our nose (literally). This cream has a slight smell when you squeeze some out but once applied that smell fades away quite quickly.
My husband is not someone who would buy moisturisers but he likes this one and would buy it again.
Designed for men but I thought I would give it a go. The smell just smells like a cream really can't describe it to be honest, its not strong and I had to put it up to my nose to actually smell it. Now since its designed for the face after a shave, I thought I would try it on the legs and bikini area.
Once shaved I put a bit of this moisturiser on and I can't say I like it much, it was too greasy for my liking but then again there are only a few creams I can actually stand, I did carry on using it, rubbing it in. It gave a coldish feeling almost like a fresh feeling, once it was dried it felt smooth and I never had the normal itching I get after shaving.
Being a female yup I would happy take this to use on my legs, but not my face - its too greasy to have near my face, now to get hubby to give it a go. Depends on how you like your moisturiser, it does the trick of keeping nice and smooth and after 14 hours later still smooth and I haven't reapplied. Its great it has UVA UVB protection from the elements if it was on your face, I couldn't see any SPF on it so using sunscreen instead of this in summer is prob ideal but in winter this would be great.
After a heavy shave - the usual aftermath of allowing the facial-forest to grow unchecked for a few weeks - my skin is often left feeling rather battered. Previously, I would give it a quick soap-wash to remove the last dregs of shaving gel and hair bits. This was fine for doing the job, but it often left my skin very dry... which usually caused a massive oily-0skin rebound the next day.
This time, I used fairly-hot water to cleanse the folicular wreckage away, and applied some of this moisturiser. So totally NOT my usual scene at all! But I think I may be a convert. My skin didn't rebound into oily madness the next day, retained a smooth and soft feeling, and was actually quite tame for almost a week before it started to get antsy again - most likely because I was due another shave.
Another facial scraping session, and another application of moisturiser, and the effect was even longer lived this time, reaching 8 days before I needed to address the moisturising issue again. Throughout this entire period, my skin's oil balance actually stayed quite acceptably low. For me, this is a very big deal indeed, as I have been battling the dreaded family curse - the Greasy Tee - since teenhood.
Overall, this was a very pleasant unguent to use, and left a pleasant after-scent that was fairly gender neutral. Though I am not sure I will continue to use it after the tube is empty, if I do stop it won't be through any fault of the product itself, but more my sheer lack of a decent shaving routine.
I was given three King of Shaves products to review: the face balm and the face scrub and the ultimate moisturiser. The moisturiser was the only one that smelt like I expected. It had a very manly scent. It probably isn't strong but it seems strong when you are applying it around your face. Men can use this without the need for a cologne. You are also safe in knowing that because of the scent it won't be borrowed by the females in your life. As a female I was very aware of the scent and kept expecting someone to comment on it when I had the moisturiser on but no one did not even my kids who are never tactful.
It was great to see that the moisturiser contained UVA/UBV filters but there was no mention of an SPF factor. For this reason I wouldn't use it as a sunscreen but during winter when I wouldn't be applying sunscreen it is reassuring to know that it will give me some protection from sun damage especially given my family history.
It is a great price and often available on special so would make a great addition to a gift basket for a man along with a couple of other King of Shaves products and razors. I know my husband still thinks moisturisers are only for women but products like this specifically designed for men will slowly change his thinking.
The SuperSkin Ultimate Moisturiser comes in a handy tube. The tube is shorter than other tubes in the King of Shaves range, but I think the size is quite good for your travel bag. The font on the tube is really clear and easy to read with the black and then teal background. I really liked the equation on the back as well, which reads Prime + Save + Protect. This indicates that the moisturiser is for the end of the shaving experience, to protect the skin. I think if you were new to trying these kind of manly face products, you might need a little guidance. So it's nice that the guidance is right there in easy to understand graphics.
My husband has not had a happy experience with many moisturisers, so getting him to give this a fair go was not on the cards. It's not that he has break outs or any bad skin reactions. He just hates the smell of them, and thinks they are too perfumed. Because this one had a slight perfumed scent, I just couldn't get him to try it.
So in order to give it a fair go, I shaved my legs and tried this on one of my legs. The moisturiser goes on easily. It doesn't smell girlie. It smells a bit like a men's deodorant. I was surprised at how non-greasy the formula was as well. Usually, they don't soak in quite as quickly as this did, but this was a really good quality moisturiser from what I have experienced with others. I wish it had a SPF factor listed on it. It does say it's especially good for after-sun, but I didn't have any sunburn to test it on.
