The Young Ones - Series Two product reviews

It was essential viewing in the 1980's for any self-respecting stroppy and opinionated person under 25, and it is just as fresh, vicious, original and hilarious now. Manic and mad, rude and pretty revolting actually, those Fab Four Scumbag students - Rik, Vyv, Neil and Mike.

This release contains all episodes of the second series - 'Bambi', 'Nasty', 'Time', 'Summer Holiday', 'Cash' and 'Sick'.

The second series of the Young Ones is quite possibly the best. The first was surreal and a good introduction to the characters. But in the second series the characters really come into their own. They go a bit further with the comedy, and break the fourth wall more. I suspect that they had already decided the series would end on episode 12 so that would have freed them up to do and say more. Also the success of the first season would have allowed them a bit more freedom.

It's hard to say which episode from this series is my favourite. They all have classic moments. Bambi has their University Challenge. Nasty is kind of their Halloween special, so lots of Vampiric fun. I also enjoyed the grave-side scene at the start when Rick quotes a bit of Bowie. Time is so surreal, and starts brilliantly with Jennifer Saunders in Rick's bed. That leads to some of the most uncomfortable television I have seen for the time, as the guys all grill Rick about the experience and he struggles to describe what he can't recall.

Cash starts with a Dynasty take off. Rik Mayall appears tanned and looking pretty hot. That episode shows what living as a student can be like. Once I had my first flatting experience, I understood the struggle for cash for sure. There is also a pregnancy which is ridiculous and very funny. Sick has a fantastic music scene with Madness, plus a dig at The Good Life.

Summer Holiday finishes the series off. Some fantastic anarchy speeches out of Rick too. But the image that sticks in my head the most is the bus with "tomorrow's way to roast" advertised on the side. These were the Young Ones.
