Product reviews...
I was recently presented with the opportunity to try a range of these products - the smoked chicken breast, the nibbles and the apricot and cream cheese Roulades. Though I have tried smoked chicken, and free-range chicken meat, in the past, this was the first time I had tried them as one product: smoked free-range chicken meat.
When I tried the smoked Chicken breast on it's own, I found the flavour to be quite strong - a little too strong for my tastes. However, once I chopped it into small pieces and tossed it through a garden salad with a light mustard mayonnaise it was perfect! The strong, smoky manuka taste came through just fine, and the dressing took the sharp edge off it. The chicken breast was also delicious in a sandwich made with thick wholegrain bread, some thinly sliced colby cheddar cheese and a light smear of tartare sauce.
The Roulades were quite nice on their own, but I found I had to heat them up in order to cope with the Honey Dew dressing, which had a somewhat unpleasant, greasy feeling to them. Warmed up, sliced thinly, and served on a cracker with maybe a thin bed of mustard pickle, they would make for great party starter snacks.
The nibbles were certainly best served hot, perhaps with a sweet chilli or sour cream and chive dipping sauce. The smokey flavour is strong enough to punch through those tastes and still retain enough kick to give you that Manuka flavour these snacks are all about.
Overall, these are a great, genuine New Zealand product that will go down a real treat at any BBQ, party or family meal. Take a dozen small (about 4-6cm diameter) Gourmet Potatoes, wash and brush them, but do NOT peel them. (All the good stuff is in the skins.) Cut them into cubes about 1-1.5cm. Boil them gently in lightly-salted water until tender, but not squishy. You don't want a mashed salad.
While the spuds boil, grab some rashers of bacon, or if you don't have any handy (like me) use 3 or 4 slices of Ham & Chicken Luncheon, or shaved ham even. ... more...
