Cindy Arella let out a sigh,
she had mud on her gumboots and dirt in her eye.
She'd fed all the chhos and milked all the cows,
cleaning the pigpen had taken her hours.
A New Zealand version of the 'Cinderella' story.

Having spent many a happy hour reading the original versions to my eldest kids during their youth, it was great to see a real Kiwi twist in this one as I read them to some of the younger members of the clan. This story in particular was really Kiwi, with a kumara instead of a pumpkin, diamond-encrusted jandals, and a funky miniskirt instead of the ballgown.
My little clanmembers loved this tale, all trying to guess what was going to happen next, who each character was in the original version, and full of questions like "Why would anyone cook mince on a barbie doll, uncle?" and "Is Mr. Prince a real prince or is that just a name?" which showed they were getting involved in the story as well as just listening.
All in all a brilliant retelling and really making it a Kiwi tale. It's taken me ages to write the review up because of how popular it has been with the kids, they keep borrowing it for a week or so before passing it around to the next in line.
