It is not often I can stomach a movie about the more horrific things humanity does to itself. Selling people into slavery of any form revolts me, so I tend to avoid watching dramatisations of it. Usually because it is softened to the point of impotence in order to get past some politcal influence or another. That's where this movie broke the chains and really impressed me.
Showing all the gritty side of this horrendous abusive trade, you see it it all. The drugs, the death, the abuse, the [-expletive deleted-] types who keep this kind of business alive and their reasons for, and justifications of, the practice... it's all in here in graphic colour. Gritty, powerful, and utterly uncompromising, it still manages to stay short of 'reality TV' thankfully.
A real eye-opener for any father, for any child getting feet itchy for that most Kiwi of institutions, "The Big O.E."... it shows us that though our world is full of wonder, adventure and excitement, the unwary can also encounter a darker, seamier side of humanity... one that doesn't want them for their skills, their minds or their potential as anything more than a self-guided toy for someone else's entertainment and pleasure.
Overall, full of action and anciticpation, this is one movie I am so very glad to have in my collection. My sons will one day want to spread their wings and fly the coup... this movie will become a part of their education and hopefully incentive for them to heed the warnings, be prepared, and plan to survive. Not just entertaining, but informative and educational.
