Bangkok Thai is situated in between Blockbuster Video and Dick Smith Electronics. Parking was quite easy to find, with plenty of parking spaces both within the Plaza carpark (Fitzherbert Avenue entrance side) and the surrounding areas.

A group of four of us arrived at Bangkok Thai on a chilly Saturday night. Immediate reactions of the place was it was very warm - there were wall heaters on full blast, and that the restaurant was on the smaller side but still seemed to have plenty of tables and wasn't too cramped so you felt like the table next door was listening to every word you said.

We were greeted by the lovely waitress behind the enormous bar/counter area, and shown to a table. Water and menus were brought out to us and we were left for a good 5 minutes to browse the menu. We had bought some BYO bottles of wine, but either they did not notice, or policy was to leave the customer to their own devices. We asked for wine glasses, these were brought out but still no offer to pour our wine or to take our unopened bottles and store them in their fridge as usually happens at other BYO restaurants we have frequented. Not a big deal to me, as we were quite happy to pour our own wine. It would have been nice to keep the unopened bottles chilled however.

We placed our orders next. My friend had to ask for 3 different appetisers before she actually found one that was available that night! It seems most of the appetisers had run out. This was at 7pm on a Saturday night, so this was a bit unexpected. She ended up enjoying what she ordered however - Satay Chicken skewers. It looked a great portion (5 skewers with dipping sauce) for an inexpensive $7.95. Another friend and I shared the deep fried Mini Spring Rolls, which gave us two and a half each, again a great price at $6.95. These were very fresh and packed full of vegetables and noodles. Really nice.

Another 10 minutes and our mains were brought out. Rice is brought out with each dish, separately plated, and very nicely presented in the shape of a heart. My Stir Fried Satay Chicken tasted very good, and the vegetables were cooked very nicely - with a nice bite still. There was a good portion of chicken too. Everybody enjoyed their meals, and we were all impressed with the generous portions and value for money. Only one of us managed to finish our meals, and the waitress was quite happy to package the rest of our dishes up to take home with us.

The dessert menu was very cheap - $5 each - but very uninspiring and everything was based around or served with ice-cream. We decided to give it a miss. I would recommend sticking to the mains, as this is what Bangkok Thai seem to do best.

Time to pay, and I was surprised to have only been charged one corkage fee instead of two - as we had finished two bottles of wine between us. This is the first BYO establishment I have been to where one corkage fee is charged to cover everything. Great!

Overall, this was a fantastic Thai experience, and great for a 'beginners' as there are plenty of non-threatening options on the menu to choose from, as well as more adventurous dishes for the more experienced Thai eaters. Highly recommended!

Product image for Barker's Tropical Mango SauceTropical Mango Sauce is sunshine on a plate! This tropical fruit lover's dream is an injection of colour and flair to dessert platters. Diced mango brings fruity flavour as a dessert dip or is an excellent base for a mango lassi - just add yoghurt, milk and a dash of cardamom.
