Me and my partner decided to dine at Aberdeen on Broadway on a recent "Date Night" The first thing I noticed upon entering was that is it very formal and most diners were of the business/professional kind. However the staff were very friendly and had us seated quickly. We were given menu's and a few minutes then we were approached to see if we would like drinks or starters. We both ordered a drink and a garlic bread.
The service was impeccable. Our Garlic Breads were served quickly. The were hot and delicious, they were a baguette style bread. We were informed of the specials and ordered our mains, my partner had the special which was Eye fillet served on a truffle mash with Rocket, Walnut and Parmesan salad, I ordered the Scotch fillet with creamy potato mash. The meals were presented beautifully and looked delicious. My partner had no complaints at all, I tried the truffle mash from his dish and that was delicious! The only complaint I had was that the mash tasted like it was instant mashed potato, it was an otherwise delicious meal!
Dessert! My favourite part and what I was most looking forward too! My partner ordered the Sticky date pudding which comes served with Vanilla Bean Ice cream, butterscotch sauce and caramel mousse, it also had some sort of popping candy displayed on the plate. He thoroughly enjoyed the dessert. I ordered The Chocolate Fix which was Chocolate Brownie, Dark Chocolate Ganache, Chocolate foam and chocolate ice cream, it was a bit of a chocolate overload but delicious none the less!
I really can not fault the service or the food, we will be back!
Having dined at Aberdeen once before and absolutely loved it, I was rather looking forward to a repeat performance, plus getting to check out the lunch time menu.
This time round, there was more of a business feel to the place, whereas when I'd gone for dinner, it'd been more relaxed and gave a really "warm" vibe. Definitely more a "couples" type restaurant. But during the lunch time, it definitely seems more a place for casual business meetings (as was in evidence by the group that were seated near my partner and I, who seemed to be doing just that), although can still be a very comfortable restaurant for just a quiet "couple's" lunch.
The staff were once again friendly and pleasant, although hovered maybe a little too much for my liking, as I rather like to be left alone while I'm eating, not asked regularly how the meal was. But then, that's just me.
The food... now this is where Aberdeen definitely surpasses most other restaurants I've tried around Palmie!! During my previous visit, the food had been absolutely delicious!!! Mouth-watering steak that was rich in flavour different to any other type of steak I'd tried in the past, and cooked so tender that it just seemed to melt in my mouth. The smokey mash I'd had last time had been again full of flavour and so creamy smooth!! This time round, I decided to try something different. First I asked for the "Bangers and Mash", and was disappointed to learn they didn't have any sausages this time. Pity they hadn't mentioned that when going through the menu after giving it to us, when we'd been told the soup of the day, fish of the day, etc. So my second choice was the AngusPure Steak'n'Bacon Pie, which proved to be what I'm starting to guess is a typical Aberdeen Steakhouse meal... full of delicious flavour, pure temptation in its aroma, and served in just the right sized portion (leaving just enough room to try one of their yummy sounding desserts)!! Again the mash had been smooth and creamy, the pastry was flaky and golden yet quite "more-ish", and the meat was juicy and tender with a wonderful gravy that also made a great dipping sauce for the house chips that I pinched off my partner's plate!!
For dessert, I chose the sticky date pudding, which is something I'm normally not a huge fan of, as it usually turns out to be a bit too sickly sweet for my tastes. But, time to try something different, and see if Aberdeen did a better job with this as well. When it was brought out, I wasn't overly impressed with the size of the portion, considering it rather tiny for the price. However, the presentation was beautiful, and the taste was absolutely wonderful!! It sat just on the borderline between too sickly sweet and just right, with a rich butterscotch sauce drizzled over and around the date pudding itself, plus the rather unusual fig and honey ice cream in a little bowl that came with it. At first mouthful, I was seriously wishing it came in a far larger portion... it was so yummy that I didn't think there's be enough to satisfy me. But by the time the last morsel went into my mouth, I realised that they'd gotten it just right. I was now full... and still comfortable. Taste-wise, I would've liked more, but I knew I wouldn't be able to eat more without taking off that comfortable feeling one gets when they've had just the right amount of a scrumptious meal!!
So, if you don't mind spending somewhat higher prices (although the food definitely makes the $$$ spent well worth it, despite paying for lunch there about what would be expected for a good sized DINNER elsewhere!!), and have a special event that needs to be celebrated, or maybe just want somewhere different and tasteful to hold the business meeting over a meal... Aberdeen Steakhouse and Bar is by far the place to go. Close to town, it suits those that want a leisurely lunch (if you're lucky enough to not have to rush back to work within an hour, like a lot of people), or if you are planning on movies or a show, or just a night out, and want a good filling feed first. By far, one of the best restaurants in town... just one that I personally will only be visiting for dinner, not lunch.
I had seen this place open a little while ago, and was really curious to see how they would be different from any other restaurant in town... especially as they were going up against one of my favourite dining spots... so it was with very observant and curious eyes I walked in with 2 other reviewers in tow... including my young son.
We were seated in the 'indoor' section, because we were informed that the 'outdoor lounge' section was fully booked for the night. Now I must mention this 'outdoor lounge' area... it's not really outdoors, but it is the back section with the slide-open roof, and has been decorated in a lounge style, with couches, padded chairs and the like... not to mention the huge fireplace. A very stylish and attractive area to dine in.
Once we were seated and orders taken, we were able to chat for a little while until our starters arrived. We all shared our selections, so I can comment on them all... first off, the garlic bread. This is a benchmark item, as no two places do them quite the same... this time around it was done on toasted baguette sliced diagonally. It had a mild flavour, with the garlic more of a hinted highlight than a powerful rush... I actually quite liked it this way, though we found the toasted baguette was a little coarse for tender little mouths.
The Charcuterie Platter was quite nice, with 4 styles of meat, some slices of wax-skinned cheddar, a bowl of relish and some really unusual wafer crackers. The best combination we all agreed on was the relish on the choritzo sausage, hold the cracker, however all the other flavours were very pleasant. We were also quite impressed with the way the wait staff offered to bump the portion size up a little to accommodate the extra mouth, as the standard size is a 2-person serve.
The last starter was chosen by my son, the Cajun Chicken Tenders on a potato and prosciutto salad... which was absolutely the tastiest tenderloin dish I have eaten in a long time... they were spicy but with a soft afterglow, cooked to a delightful tenderness, and the salad had a very creamy texture, with the soft spuds and the sauce.
After a little more waiting, while we enjoyed our drinks and discussed some of the finer points of the semi-formal decor, our mains arrived. I had ordered the Scotch Fillet, with the Kumara Mash, seasonal veges, garlic butter and aioli sauce on the side. The veges were steamed to perfection, though I was not a fan of the fennel, and I must say the sauces were quite tasty... but by far the leader of the show was the steak. Pure NZ Angus beef, cooked to 'medium' so it was pink and moist in the middle... sheer perfection! Not a cheap meat by any means, but well worth every penny.
My son had ordered the Prime Rib Eye, but found himself unable to finish it... I was so taken by the quality of this delightful type of beef that I admit to snarfing it off his plate and hogging it down myself... which was perhaps not the smartest move, since I was -this- close to the 'Creosote Point' before I even started on it!
Overall, this was by far the best meal at a restaurant I have had in years! The food was great, the decore was very up-market (my companion used a wonderful phrase, "Business-Casual"), and most importantly the staff were very friendly, and honest enough to admit that because this was a fresh new dinner menu they hadn't got it all memorised yet. I can accept honesty, it's the one's who try to bluff and fluff you around that annoy me. The only slight hiccups were a lack of kids menu, and a drinks menu that lacked non-alcoholic drinks, however it was explained that they were revamping the entire menu structure, and the new menus were delayed at the printers because of the long weekend (Anzac weekend) so I wouldn't worry about it for your visit. The music was real music from the 60's and 70's, and the staff were always happy to stop and check your drinks and answer questions, but without being too obtrusive. Well done to the Aberdeen crew, you have done yourselves proud here!
