The owner of this establishment has had a number of venues for his business, this being the latest. I have followed him wherever he moved for one reason and one reason only... his Turkish food is by far the best I have found in town... and anywhere in the North Island actually! As far south as Wellington, as far north as Auckland's North Shore... I have tried a benchmark meal at nearly every Tuirkish place I could find... a regular mixed doner kebab, with all the salads (easy on the onions) with tomato, humus and yoghurt sauces, take away please.
There have been times when I have taken 3, or maybe 4 bites then hurled the rest in the nearest bin... on one memorable occassion I offered an offending kebab ordered at a local takeaway kiosk to a stray dog that was hovering nearby. I unwrapped the foil and threw the kebab onto a nearby patch of grass and walked away a few metres. The dog walked over, took one sniff, and despite being clearly ravenous, turns its nose up, gave me a dismissive glance and strutted away in search of something it would eat.
Thankfully, I have never had any situation even close when it comes to food ordered from Turkish Delight. The meat is well cooked, tender and full of flavour, the salads are always fresh and crisp, the dressings and sauces are clean and have sharp flavours of their own, and there's always just a little bit extra, so that you end up starting off with a moist kebab, but by the end, when many kebabs I have tried leave you with a tough, chewy bit of folded pita, these ones leave you with a juicy mess full of taste that you just can't resist stuffing quickly into your mouth to finish the meal off... IF you finish it! These guys don't skimp on the fillings by any means!
It has reached the point where I can't finish a 'medium' kebab on my own, so I tend to drag a willing cohort in with me and we split a large kebab between us... and even that leaves us happily packed, without feeling stuffed. So beware of re-enacting 'Mr Creosote' here folks!
There's a reasonable array of chilled drinks available, both healthy and otherwise, as well as a few hot brewed beverages you can enjoy with your meal... and kebabs are by no means the only fare to consider. You could try a burger, or maybe have your choice of meat on a plate with salad or rice, and there are even vegetarian options available. The seating is cosy, and the wooden benchseats are reasonably comfortable, but the really nice spot is the padded alcove right up the back, great for groups of up to 8.
Parking is the biggest let-down about the location, as there is minimal parking by the door, so if you want to come and try some great food, find a good park on the Square side of the road, or walk in from nearby bulk-parking.
Overall, well worth trying if you are a local, or a visitor wanting to try some great food while you share our wonderful city with us.
