Dark Days Are Coming.

Fifty years from now, the sun is dying, and mankind is dying with it. Our last hope: a spaceship and a crew of eight men and women. They carry a device which will breathe new life into the star. But deep into their voyage, out of radio contact with Earth, their mission is starting to unravel. There is an accident, a fatal mistake, and a distress beacon from a spaceship that disappeared seven years earlier. Soon the crew is fighting not only for their lives, but their sanity.

Having seen the talented, and somewhat freaky, Mr Cillian Murphy in another movie, Disco Pigs, I was wondering how he was going to come across in this movie... instead of being a psychotic looney, this time around he's an introverted scientist on a potentially 1-way trip in a last-ditch attempt to kick-start the sun!

I wasn't too sure whether this movie was going to be another variant of the "dodging space junk, but one piece hits a critical system and everyone limps along with great courage to complete the mission" or a variant of the "just about to hit the main switch, and suddenly an alien shows up and tries to stop them" scenarios... and so you can imagine my surprise when it turned out to be a hybrid of both!

However, I was expecting some stunning special effects, and I did get those, in spades! Some awesome images of the solar disk as the spacecraft approached the sun, some great 'virtual projection' technology posited for use within the ship to stem the growing sense of confinement, and some really interesting scenes with 'the mystery visitor'... but I won't go into that here, you have to see it for yourself.

Overall, a great movie, with a lot going for it. It even holds itself together most of the way... but what *I* found a little disappointing was the lack of any details regarding the equipment used to kick-start the sun, 'the bomb' as it was called in the movie. There were some very strange scenes that almost reminded me of the thriller 'Cube', but nothing that really explained what 'the bomb' actually was. However, despite that tiny niggle, I was really impressed and plan to add this to my 'watch it again, and again, and again...' pile. Wink Icon

Product reviews for listing 6160: Transformers 3: Dark Of The Moon -  Directed by Michael Bay

Product image for Transformers 3: Dark Of The MoonSam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) and his new girlfriend, Carly (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), join the fray when the evil Decepticons renew their longstanding war against the Autobots.

Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) believes that resurrecting ancient Transformer Sentinel Prime (Leonard Nimoy), once the leader of the Autobots, may lead to victory. That decision, however, has devastating consequences; the war appears to tip in favour of the Decepticons, leading to a climactic battle in Chicago.
