Firstly I should mention how compact and light these speakers are. They fit snuggly into their carrycase, which is so tidy and smooth, it will not look out of place in any mobile exec's carrycase. I know this because they sit so smoothly in my laptop case, you can easily see how well designed for the purpose they are.
The sound is good, lightyears beyond the ability of the tinny little squeekers built in to the laptop itself, but these still have their limits. Forget heavy-bass, if the soundtrack demands that the floor be shaking from the bass, these speakers are going to give you that un-joyous sound of the speaker membranes starting to give it up as a lost cause. So, if you groove to Korn or Heavy metal, move up to a portable sub-woofer-included speaker set. However, if James Blunt or Franz Ferdinand is more your thing, these speakers are going to give you excellent sound no matter where you go.
The controls set atop one of the speakers is great for those who have laptops that double as a glorified walkman, because you can adjust your soundscape without having to pop the lid. of course, if your lappy is designed properly, you have easy access to all of the controls anyway, so the extra set are just a bonus.
In summary, these are actually some very high-quality speakers, and will make a good investment for any portable audiophile. They'll make a good job of that all-important sales presentation, but don't expect to go home afterwards and rock the house with them.
