This is one of those sweets that I can recall a bag of them sitting in the car glove box, pulled out whenever one of us wasn't feeling too hot during a long car drive or just for when you needed a little pick me up. I haven't had any for quite a few years now, as it seemed my favourite brand had changed its recipe and I was no longer enjoying them like I used to. Seeing these come up for review I figured it was high time to try them again and I had two kids who were keen to give these a try and one very disappointed they couldn't (newly dairy-free diet). I must admit that I like the design on the bag, it's simple, tells you what it is but overall looks aesthetically pleasing.

I like that these are individually wrapped, it means I don't have to worry about ants, should everything fall out of the packet. Those of us who could eat these grabbed one to try. My eldest, who is more a chocolate person, thought that these were rather yummy and said that they would happily eat more again, but maybe only if we were in the car 'like mum used to'. My youngest, who would eat butter straight from the packet if they could, thought that these were delicious and I had to remind them to slow down lest they go through the whole pack too fast. I enjoyed that taste and there was no horrible fake sugar aftertaste with these.

I enjoyed these more than I thought I would and can see us buying a bag to share in the future.

These were a bit of a gamble for me as I don't usually like butter drops but with respect to all those folk who have offered them to me over the years, I thought I would try them to see if they could be modernised. The answer is yes. These taste like every old person's favourite lolly but have a lovely shape and texture. A good all-round sweet that you could reliably give to anyone (think bowl on the coffee table when folk visit around Christmas or occasions). Was very impressed these did not taste healthier even though it was clear from the packet they are. The size of the contents was great. Big enough but not so many you would end up keeping them for years.

I am always a bit hesitant with "sugar-free" as sometimes you can get some unusual taste effects or artificial feelings from the lack of sugar and the weird additions to get the right texture and taste. I was very impressed that I would not have known these were sugar-free and as I have had little experience with Stevia this was great to show there is not a weird taste associated with it. Also, a good short ingredient list, which is nice to see on sweet treats. I would feel comfortable offering these to children.

Would totally put these in a bowl (thanks Covid times) so that they could be shared but safely in little individual wraps (not sure they are recyclable though?). It was good to see the instructions on how to get into the individual sweet as well. Most likely these sweets will end up in the car (probably not in the bag as it didn't keep its shape as well as I would have hoped and we did have the wrapped sweets spill out over the table).

Double D was a new company for me and I think they have a real place in the better sweets market. Well done for not losing taste but improving the ingredients.

Growing up I remember visiting my grandparent's house in the holidays, there was always without fail a packet of the Werther's Originals candy beside Grandad's chair, this was when I first tasted them, and found I was quite partial to them. My 10 year old daughter has developed a love for them now too, and they are actually her preferred choice of candy oddly. When I saw that there were these butter candies available that were sugar free, I knew that I would like to try them, and she would too.

The packaging stands out well with the contrasting colours, the brand name Double 'D' is obvious at the top, there is no doubting that these are Butter Candy Drops, and there is a scrumptious looking candy on the front. These candies are individually wrapped, all natural colours and flavours, and are sweetened with natural stevia. The packet is 70g in size, and contains roughly 17 pieces of candy per pack. There is a warning in bold type that 'excessive consumption may have a laxative effect and/or cause stomach discomfort, bearing this in mind I decided these would need to be rationed so my daughter didn't eat too many at once.

The candies are wrapped in a clear plastic, which is easy to tear open, the candy is a light brown colour, and a smooth texture. The candy is a delicious, buttery, melt slowly in your mouth treat, with no funky aftertaste. Since these are individually wrapped I have got some stashed away in my car, as my daughter finds these soothing for motion sickness on long car rides.

I think this product is going to be one to have stashed away, I think the price is acceptable for a healthier option, and the fact that they need to be limited, not scoffed at once, will teach me self control, hopefully! I look forward to trying some more of the Double 'D' range in the future.

I honestly had no idea what to expect from this. I was drawn to the fact that they are sugar free and, I am trying to be good after years of abusing the stuff. I am on the look out for something I can suck while at work to give me moisture in my mouth from having to wear a mask. I am also looking for an energy pick me up as my days vary and I am always on the run being a merchandiser.

First off I love the fact that they are individually wrapped so they are perfect for having in the car or putting in your pocket. Secondly they can take quite a while to suck and the taste slowly comes thru after a while. Its not over powering and you can feel the trickle when you inhale. As you don't want the world to know you are eating them they let off quite the crunch if you bite them and so I find obligated to just have in my mouth and suck. If you are naughty and do bite there is the entertaining times where it gets stuck to your teeth and your tongue gets to have fun flicking it off your teeth.

You do not need to eat more than one at a time as they are actually very satisfying. I love when I do have them that I am eating a 'healthier sweet' so I do not feel as guilty. My family have also been enjoying them and I have found that my bag quickly disappears if left on the table. The price is great and I am sure in times to come this will be added to the shopping trolley. I don't find there is a lot of flavor to it but I do find them 'fulling the void'.

Over the years I have been to many conferences and have usually been greeted by small bowls of hard peppermints, each in its own little plastic wrap. My first thought, when tasting a butter candy, was that these would be so much better to put out on conference tables. They have a lovely smooth surface which does not irritate your tongue when you suck them, and an authentic butterscotch taste. And the bonus is the individual wrapper which unzips exactly where it is supposed to, releasing the sweet into your hand and leaving the empty wrapper secure in your fingertips. After years of battling the static electricity in regular conference peppermint wrappers, it was a pleasure to find such a compliant piece of plastic. I never imagined I would find myself singing the praises of a lolly wrapper, but there is a first time for everything.

The sweets themselves are not sticky. There is a warning on the packet that they should not be left in the sunlight. However, they survived the "hot day in the car" test with no discernible surface melting, and the flavour was unaffected. I also tried leaving one in the fridge for a few hours and again there was no change to be seen. This makes them the perfect travel companion; like all boiled sweets, they stop you getting thirsty. One of the most annoying things about summer driving is the constant dry mouth - and if you drink too much water you have to keep making comfort stops. Sucking a lolly has the same effect but most lollies are high in sugar so what you gain in time you lose in potential tooth decay. This product contains no sugar so it is not going to ruin your teeth even if you have several in a row.

Although the price is quite high, given that you do not get a lot of lollies in one bag, it is useful to know that you are getting a product that is much better for you than a conventional sweet. Tooth decay is a very real problem among our young people today, and one of the chief causes is the popularity of sugary drinks and confectionery. Having an alternative which will satisfy a sweet tooth without damaging it is an encouragement to eat healthy. It is a bonus that it tastes so good.

I have three children that all like lollies (I do not think there are many kids that dislike them!!) so always looking for healthier treat options, and things that both my hubby and I will like too - life needs treats, right!! I have previously tried the fruit candy by Double D, so hoped that these would live up to my expectation too , and be nice as well.

The package has a lot of information on it, including the ingredients, serving size (just one candy), which is because of the ingredients (stevia being one) that can cause "stomach discomfort" (such a nice way to put it!) if you eat too many. Whilst I would definitely not recommend eating the whole bag in one go, more than one, or a couple would be okay - but do be aware of this! Another thing to note is that these do have a fair amount of salt / sodium - again, another reason to not eat the whole bag in one go. The candies are also individually wrapped, which makes them handy to pop in your bag or car without worrying about having a sticky mess if you forget they are in there.

On to the important information - how do these actually taste - and an you taste the ''sugar free'' stevia? The answer to this is that they are really tasty! They are not like the Werther's or the Heards, and do have a distinct taste but it is really nice, and does not appear to leave the ''not sugar" coating in your mouth you sometimes get from products with stevia. I also gave these to some very honest critics (my three children) and asked them what they thought, as you can guarantee they will tell you exactly what they think. All three of them really liked these and said that they would like us to get them again. They are on the pricier side for sweets, but to be honest, treats are things you should not be consuming lots of anyway, so that last a while, and when they are better for you, I feel that is worth paying for!

I love Werther's Originals and usually have a stash in the car as something to suck on when I'm driving home. However, I've noticed that I get through a packet quite quickly and I know that the sugar consumption isn't that good for me, especially as I'm trying to get healthier. For these reasons, I was looking forward to trying Double 'D's Sugar Free Butter Candy.

The white and light brown packet has a picture of a butter candy on the front and the bag weighs in at a relatively light 70 grams. I noticed that they use Stevia and Isomalt which I recognised them using in other Doube 'D' sugar free lollies. The serving size is 1 drop and the average servings per pack are approximately 17 but I counted 20 in my bag. When I looked at the food label I noticed that they were quite high in sodium 14mg and isomalt (3.5g) I also noted in bold the statement "Excessive consumption may have a laxative effect and/ or cause stomach discomfort" - note to self, stick to the recommended serving size!

When I opened the back I was a little surprised to see how dark the candy was. Each candy was individually wrapped in a clear plastic wrapper that you need to rip to open. The candy had a lovely buttery taste and no nasty aftertaste which some sugar free lollies have. Whilst not the same taste and flavour as Werther's, they obviously have the benefits of being sugar free. My daughters both loved them and asked for more but after the comment about the laxative effect, I thought it in everyone's best interests to decline them. Although they may seem expensive for the weight, if you are only having one at a time, and being sugar free, I don't think they are that bad! I'll definitely be buying more for the car!
