Since he started with the BBC's fledgling Television Department in 1952, David Attenborough has been instrumental in showing the wider world our planet's beauty, culture and other life in it's varied and wonderous diversity. Such sights as most people would otherwise never see, and an independent viewpoint on cultures other than our own.
He is the ultimate icon of Natural Wildlife Documentaries and has been for well over 50 years and counting. And this DVD has 6 of his most stunning documentaries from his career, and my favourite Attenborough doco, "Life on Air", an autobiography of the man, his mission, and the path he took to get there. Stunning stuff.
As an avid doco sponge myself, I have a bias towards any great expedition, I am in awe at the way life always seems to find a way around, over, under or through the obstacles that clutter our varied paths, and Sir David has been an eye into some of the most stunning examples of life at it's best and worst, fighting for it's very right to continue existing in the face of adversity.
Overall, this one is a real treasure. If docos are your thing, you'll be off to buy this one for sure. Full of rich and interesting things, it is a great way to pass an overcast afternoon. I was a little surprised at one event in particular in "The Song of the Earth" wherein his expedition into the mountain jungle of central New Guinea in search of a lost tribe, shows him breaking and entering a locked private dwelling of said lost tribe. Being migratory, they cycle through dwellings around the year... and he broke one open and filmed inside... by today's standards, that would be unacceptable to do, let alone film! But hey, 5 minutes of "OMG!" vs 362 minutes of "Way cool..." is easy to overlook.
