I was super excited to receive the furry llama pillow to sew and make yourself and I could not wait to make it with my niece as I knew she would love to make it. She has just turned 8 and although this is for 10 years and up I knew she would be ok with it as she is rather mature for her age and really into stuff like this. I went over to visit and took this kit with me. When I walked in and showed her it she was so excited and asked her mum if she could make it with me straight away. She loved having a flick through the book and instructions before we got started and was buzzing out over the pictures and what it will look like at the end.
We got to work and followed the instructions which were easy enough and I found my niece followed them well enough for her age as well. We both loved looking at the illustrations and got excited with every flip of the page with what was coming next. I niece is right into her sewing and making cute wee things, she helps her mum make my baby a bib when I had my baby. She also makes a lot for her dancing outfits with her mum. At one stage I left her to it and watched her as she set off on her own. I loved seeing the smile on her face as she made it and wow the end result is so cool. She was so happy with it and herself and ran off to show mum and dad and her brother.
This would make an awesome birthday or Christmas gift for any child as it is so much fun, and it is great to see kids sit down and do cool stuff like this rather than playing on devices. Great for the price you pay. Definitely keen to do this again and maybe next time my ten year old son might be keen to make one.
Klutz activity kits have been around for so long now and we have had many of them in our household between the children, with the first being an origami book when my now 17 year old was 5!! We have always found them great, having everything you need to complete a project in one kit with a book telling you what to do. As always the sew your own furry llama kit was great, included in the box were all the pieces you needed to sew the llama with extra pieces to add your own personalised touch. My 17 year old decided to make this with her 7 year old brother as a present for their aunt for Christmas.
While he wasn't able to sew the way she could, having her assistance he could complete parts of the project too, and the helpful picture guides and diagrams in the book were absolutely great for this. There is a quick sew guide to help children learn how to thread, a needle , and learn some basic stitching techniques. This has kind of spurred on an interest in sewing in my 7 year old as he learnt how to do it so we now have lots of stitched together pieces of fabric so definitely a great introduction for him to learn some useful sewing techniques.
The pre cut pieces of the llama make it easy to start of your assembly and the two children together managed to do it all on their own. Joining the fabric together and sewing it before stuffing and adding their personal touches. There are no pins included in the kit to pin your pieces of fabric together before stitching but I did have my own pins in my own sewing kit that the children could use, just a note to anyone buying the kit we found the pins an absolute necessity to keep the pieces together as we sewed so make sure you have some on hand if you are buying the kit.
The book has some great projects and templates for creating the accessories for your llama including a top hat, tassels, flowers, or a unicorn horn. So some great choices to suit a range of tastes, also with different coloured pieces of felt and strings it allows the children to make it their own by selecting their favourite ideas. My children were able to find their favourite colours to make their blanket for the llama and the flower accessories. They thought the project was relatively easy and were very happy with the finished Llama pillow and proud to give it to their aunt who loved her gift.
I think the Klutz kits are great in that they do give children a complete project with all the materials they will need while also teaching skills and techniques that they can use for other projects of their own in the future. We loved the Sew your own Furry Llama pillow.
