Frankly, I started off being quite dubious about this one... after all, there were really only 5 pages to the story, and one sentence per page... but, oh, the pop-up models... they made it brilliant!

The engineering is wonderful, but you need to be very careful when you first open each page, because the models can 'lock' in the flat state, meaning that if you open the pages too quickly, you can rip some of the models... as I did for one of them. Repairs can be effective... but ugly.

My son apsolutely adored the book, as it was a simple story, but he was so happy and proud of himself that he was able to read almost every word by himself. Not bad, for him. And he was giggling like mad every time a new model popped up.

Overall, I would have been very happy to have gone to a bookshop and paid an extra $10-$15, if there had been some more pop-up models in the book, but for what it is, it's a great addition to any child's library. Most suitable for children with mental ages under 7, as an adult, I was fascinated by the engineering of the models themselves. After re-creasing some folds to prevent flat-lock, the book operates as specified, smooth and easy.

Product reviews for listing 4861: My New Zealand Story: Lighthouse Family -  Written by: Philippa Werry

Product image for My New Zealand Story: Lighthouse FamilyDuring World War Two, coastal New Zealand was on high alert due to threats of invasion. Imagine living on a lighthouse then...

For Frances and her family, living on a remote lighthouse station, World War Two is both far away and scarily close. There are rumours of submarines in the Pacific. The Japanese have attacked Pearl Harbor, taken Singapore and bombed Darwin... so what's to stop them invading New Zealand next?
