Product reviews...
Farrah's wraps are an absolute favourite in our house and are the only wraps we will ever buy as the quality is far superior to other brands on the market, there always fresh, they never rip, tear or crack no matter what which makes these wraps super easy to use and versatile. When it comes to flavoured wraps Farrah's really outdone themselves as there variety is amazing, when I saw the new superbeet wraps I immediately was drawn to the bright pink colouring and being a beetroot lover I knew these were something I needed to get my hands on.
Miss 5 who helped me to unpack my package of goodies was delighted to see that the wraps were, in fact, pink (her favourite colour) and asked to have one then and there, I explained to her that they were beetroot flavoured so she needed to carefully think about what she put on her wrap, her end decision was raspberry jam, why because it's almost the same colour. This wouldn't have been my pick but she loved it and ate the whole thing, so much so that she prepared herself another superbeet wrap exactly the same way for lunch at school the next day.
I decided to cook wraps for dinner that night before Miss 5 could gobble up the rest of the packet, trying to think of toppings to use that wouldn't take over the taste of the beetroot I opted to use chicken, lettuce, cheese and cucumber with a little mayonnaise to keep it basic. I was very pleasantly surprised by the fact that you could really taste the beetroot in the wrap, and also a bit of a tartness coming through which I put down to the fact that balsamic vinegar is one of the ingredients used in these. The combination of flavours used was perfect to balance off the flavours of the wraps themselves.
Since trying these wraps I have purchased them away they are the best way to get something healthy and filling into Miss 5's lunchbox as she is not a sandwich fan. I plan to use these at Christmas to make some little mini starter wraps alongside Farrah's spinach wraps for a Christmas coloured theme. Thanks, Farrahs for yet again another tasty product.
When I opened up our latest review box and found not one, but two packets of wraps, I was delighted. When Farrah's first brought these out I tried to win some, so I could try them out with my very much wrap loving family - particularly the children! My kids did notice the colour of the wraps first, and wanted to know what made the wraps pink. I had a look and discovered that over a third of the ingredients comes from beetroot!
These Superbeet wraps contain 6 wraps in each packet, which is standard for Farrah's, and are proudly Vegetarian,Vegan, Halal Certified, Dairy and Yeast Free, and tells you that they are produced where they also produce products that contain sesame seeds and soy. This is fantastic information for anyone that has allergies themselves, or a family member that has dietary issues. As well as this they are a Kiwi made product, made in Upper Hutt.
Opening up the wrap packet was very easy, tear open the resealable packet, which is always good if you are not planning to eat them all in one go. The smell of the beetroot reached my nose, and it was quite a sweet smell, but not so much so that it was overpowering. My children were not super excited to be the guinea pigs, deciding I should be first to try them. I did the same as I had with the herb wraps, and tried it plain first, to taste the full flavour. When you bite into it, you find that it is a nice soft wrap and of a very generous size, so you do not feel shortchanged. The flavour itself is not really very beetroot-y, but more on the sweet side, like beetroot is. I quite enjoyed the flavour, but only one of my children did - with the other two stating it tasted too sweet compared to other wraps (they are used to no flavour ones).
Farrah's wraps, and in fact all their products are of a high quality. This is reflected in the higher price, but I would be prepared to pay that know that you eliminate the splitting, cracking, leaking problems you can get with other wraps. For me, I was interested to see how my sensitive stomach and gut was able to handle these - and found absolutely no problems definitely a good alternative to bread.
These are a great product and are different to what is on the market at the moment - which is great - variety is the spice of life, so they say!!
I have always been a fan of wraps and tortillas as they make for a nice quick, healthy lunch or dinner. I can make wraps for dinner and have the left overs for lunch the next day. You can jazz them up as much as you want with the fillings you choose, and can flavour simple meats with a bit of a seasoning and have a really yummy meal. The perfect option for someone like me who lives alone! I was definitely attracted to these wraps because of their colour too, something a little bit different and to make the food look even more interesting. I am not a fan of beetroot though so was a little torn as I was hoping they didn't taste too much like beetroot.
The first way I used these wraps was to create chicken and salad wraps for dinner. I cooked up some chicken in a spicy lime based crispy chicken seasoning and cut up some salad ingredients - lettuce, spinach, capsicum, onion and found some chipotle mayo to go with it. Once the chicken was cooked I put my wrap together. These wraps are a very good size, I was able to have just one a fill it with plenty of ingredients that were enough for a main meal. They were very soft and I was able to fold it around the ingredients easily without it ripping. The flavour was very mild and got lost in the ingredients especially with using chipotle.
I have wanted to make my own homemade tortilla chips for some time now, so I thought this would be the perfect time to try. Having never made them before I enlisted the help of my partner who had. He cut all of the wraps up, lightly coated them in oil and sprinkled some salt on top. Unfortunately we lost the first batch as they didn't take as long to cook as what we thought! The next two batches were perfect though and they came out so crispy and tasty. I enjoyed the tortilla chips as a snack at work over the next few days. In an air tight container they stayed crispy until they were gone. They were amazing teamed with a little bit of chipotle mayo. Next time I make nachoes I would like to use these instead of corn chips as they would definitely hold up to being used to scoop up a mince mixture. I would also like to try some of the other flavours as tortilla chips, especially the garlic butter!
As the weather starts to improve and life gets even more hectic as the silly season speeds up faster than you can say "Tuesday" meals become a bit of a blur as its basically a bite in between engagements. So having something that is yummy, fast and something the girls will eat in a hurry can be a bit of a challenge at times, but as soon as I mention the word 'Wraps' they are all in. That is until they looked at the colour and both turned their nose up at it. I explained that its beetroot and they both said 'we hate beetroot' until I reminded them what beetroot was and then they both said they would try.
Opening the packet is simple you just tear across the packet and it has a reseal area so if you do end up with any left you can keep it nice and fresh. As there are four mouths to feed there is no chance of having any left over and as this is only six wraps it meant only hubby and myself got 2 wraps and the girls only got one each. I did like the pink colouring of the packet as it did scream out beetroot.
The great thing about wraps is everyone can make their own - it takes literally five minutes of dicing, slicing and arranging plates and then its a free for all. Chicken, cheese, onions, avocado, tomatoes, lettuce, hummus, garlic and feta sauce - so simple no fuss no worries. I decided to have mine rather bland with no sauce so I could experience the wrap on its own.
The first thing I noticed was how fresh it felt. It had been sitting in a box for the past week and you could not tell at all. The next thing is, like the packet says, it does not crack or split no matter what you do to it which is really great means no fillings falling out and no mess. The next thing was the taste to be honest it was not all that I had hoped for. I was kind of expecting a beetroot hit but instead I just had a red wrap with not much of anything. When it mixed with the humus it was fantastic but then that was more the humus than the wrap itself. I had a good 2 to 3 bites of just the wrap itself and was just left feeling like a normal wrap. Once I hit the filling it was perfect and hit all the right spots but again that was more the filling than the wrap itself.
As I was left underwhelmed by it all I but sauce on the next one and covered it more with the humus and yip it was perfect hit the spot exactly. But my husband and both the girls said that they really enjoyed and would like again where as I was just thinking it was okay. Just a basic wrap with some colour to it that I wished I had added some extra beetroot to myself.
I used to adore beetroot until I ate too much of the stuff and got sick of it, I now have a nine year old who adores the stuff (to the point where 75% of her subway sandwich is beetroot) but I love the Farrah's range, so knew I had to try this. My kids were a little put off by its bright colour but all tried a small portion of the wrap before I went to dish their dinner up. My seven and eleven year olds both declared their dislike for the wrap, both stating that they didn't like the flavour at all, whilst miss nine, the beetroot lover, looked absolutely delighted when she tried her piece.
My first use for these was as a wrap with rice and assorted veges in a teriyaki sauce, folded up inside. As per what we've come to expect from this brand, I was able to overload our wraps and when folded they didn't break, rip or tear, which is fabulous as it means you aren't going to loose all your food everywhere. My nine year old loved the combo, I didn't find that I could taste any of the beetroot so it left no lasting impact on me, my mother who also isn't a fan of beetroot said that this was quite nice as she could pick out a hint of flavour but it didn't overpower the rest of the meal.
My last use for this (because miss nine used it instead of bread) was with a thick layer of cheese, some spaghetti and then more cheese, wrapped up and popped in the oven till melted. It all went together well and despite the amount of moisture, it didn't rip or break so I didn't end up with boiling hot spaghetti on my hands or lap. Whilst I'm not fussed on these, they were a HUGE hit with miss nine, so for her, I'll be buying this again.
Saying you don't like to eat beetroot is the same as saying you don't like to eat sugar. Once beetroot is processed and served with other selected ingredients, it offers a whole new taste experience. I have never liked plain beetroot, but have learned all sorts of tasty ways of preparing it. So I was prepared to welcome a new sensation, and I was right! Just as sugar made into confectionery or sprinkled on cereal is worlds apart from a mere teaspoon of sugar, these beet wraps are delicious.
I tried a piece of one on its own first and was impressed by the flavour burst. Unlike others in this wrap range, there is nothing shy about this one. It has a good, strong flavour, reminiscent of fresh sweetcorn enhanced with a touch of vinegar, and is quite tasty just on its own. (I often used beetroot as a substitute for corn when I lived in northern Europe because the flavours are quite similar - especially in dishes like corn bread and hot tamales.)
After the test piece, I invited my daughter to try some as a roll-up with some plain fillings. We settled for soft cream cheese and asparagus; this was a good combination choice as it allowed the beetroot flavour to come through. We agreed that a stronger mix of ingredients would be too rich and might spoil the effect; this way the sweet earthiness of the beets is still apparent. We discussed other possible fillings and thought that a light hummus with lettuce or tuna, or maybe avocado, would also be good. Another possibility we discussed was the idea of having it as a dessert given that the beetroot is already quite sweet - maybe with a spread of cream cheese with a scrape of tart fruit compote to add flavour. The wraps could be rolled up and then sliced to look like sushi.
My favourite combination was with a freshly made borscht. I toasted a couple of wraps in a flat grill until they were crisp, then cut each one into triangular segments. The borscht was made with a chicken and corn base with diced fresh beetroot added. After it had finished cooking, I added a large blob of sour cream on top. This was a favourite dish when we lived in Europe; we used to serve it with hunks of soda bread, ideal for a northern winter. The toasted wraps made an appropriate and light alternative for the kiwi climate, with the flavours dovetailing perfectly. As a matter of interest, I tried a plain wrap with some leftover borscht next day, and it was nowhere near as successful as the superbeet version.
I would advise anyone who finds the colour a little challenging to trust Farrah's and give it a go. Both my daughter and I have given it the thumbs up, and will be buying it again for certain. Like all Farrah's wraps, it comes in a zip-lock bag so the leftover wraps can be stored for next time. This is useful if there are only one or two of you having them as it would be well-nigh impossible to eat more than two at a sitting. In fact, if it is served with a topping, one is normally enough.
