The idea of salt, sugar and a flavour together at some time may have seemed a bit weird, and people did of course question this when salted caramel first made its appearance, and now we do not even think twice about it! I was interested and intrigued to see the interesting combinations that In-Salt has so far and so eagerly requested them.
Opening my review box I was delighted to find two varieties to try and could not wait! I first wanted to try the flavours in their "true state" so to speak, so I opened the packet and took a wee bit out to try. The first taste did seem a little salty, but then the coffee and sweetness hit me as well. It is a very interesting and delicious combination that I wanted more of!
Looking at the packet it is a simple and appealing one - you can see with the little window on the front what you are getting. Having received another flavour variety, I did note that they are all the same - perhaps a difference in the packet label colour or the foil would make each flavour distinctive? The packet is resealable and also that is stands up well on its own - great for storage in the pantry. I noted that nowhere on the packet that actually tells you how much is in there, so in terms of value for money, it is hard to tell. In having said that - you really only need a small amount of the salted espresso so I do think that the packet contents would last a fair while.
The suggestions for the Salted Espresso include icecream, yoghurt, in iced coffee as a topping or in baking. I decided to try it a little differently - whipped through mascarpone cream and with custard to top some tinned peaches. OMgoodness - it was delicious, though looked like a complete mess! I did think when eating it that I personally would prefer more of the salted espresso flavour - so would add more to my own - the kids however did not seem to even notice it - yay!
I can think of quite a few options to use this in - my first would be a tiramisu/sponge type dessert, I would like to make coffee walnut muffins and add this to the top to make the crispy crunch, but also - after seeing a picture from another reviewer - cocktails or liqueurs to decorate the glass and accentuate the taste.
This little bag of espresso salted goodness really is delightful and I am really looking forward to trying other flavours!!
This sounded like an interesting product that could be used in many ways so I was excited to see that it was included in my parcel. I first noticed the great coffee smell, my first experiment was to add to ice cream and see what the family thought. They all loved it and so did I. I had the thought to use it in a cake recipe to see what would happen. I decided to substitute the espresso sugar/salt for some of the sugar in my recipe and since it was salted to leave out the pinch of salt. The cake took a bit longer to bake and as a result was slightly singed but it didn't seem to affect the taste. The rest of the family said they could taste the coffee but I found that it was a bit too subtle for me although I did have a second and third piece so it wasn't that bad, it was much gentler than some coffee cakes.
My next experiment was to sprinkle over the top of a cup of coffee since that was one suggestion and it was great, made my coffee taste like it was barista made. I was already impressed with how much I could use this product for and how little I had used, there was still more than half the bag left. My only complaint would be that there is no way of knowing how much sugar was in the bag since the information didn't say anywhere on the bag.
One morning I was making myself some rolled oats for breakfast and had the sudden thought of I wonder what this would taste like on my oats so I sprinkled some on the oats and took a bite, it was really yummy and made my breakfast have a slight coffee taste.
Since this product was really tasty and can be used in so many ways I would consider buying this in the shops but since I can't know if it is value for money since I have no idea how much of the product is in the bag.
I love a good coffee flavoured treat, weather it is straight out coffee, ice cream, gelato, cake, lollies etc but I had never even heard of salted espresso sugar before, so I was interested in giving it a try whilst hoping tha the salt wouldn't overpower the taste of the coffee. This comes in a handy resealable bag which is small enough to not take up a tonne of space but big enough that you feel like you're getting a nice amount for the price, the only thing that I would add would be a weight as I very much need to know what I'm getting for my money. Another fab thing about this is that there's only three ingredients so you're not going to be overloaded with lots of different things.
I decided to try this on its own first and ended up finding a small dab wasn't enough, I poured a small amount in my hand and proceeded the give it a good taste test. I found that my first hit of flavour was all salt, which was quite strong, followed by a lovely mix of the sugar and coffee. I decided that my first use would be with the coffee liquor that was sitting in my fridge, so I dipped the top of a shot glass in water and then rolled it in this mix before filling up the glass with the liquor. The Salted Espresso added such a nice hit to the liquor and really gave the cheap bottle a slightly sophisticated lift. I also used this mixed in with some plain vanilla yogurt and it added a good flavour to it, a mix I would do again.
I'll be getting this for my coffee loving friends.
If you would have said to me to put salt in or on a sweet drink or food I would have thought the idea utterly crazy but now with the presence of such things as salted caramel, I would be crazy not to try new fusions of flavours. I used to have my oranges plain until one of the work colleagues said to try adding salt to the orange slices as it takes the edge off the acidity and adds a nice salty taste. I tried it purely out of just to show I'd give it a shot and to this day I have continued to add salt to my oranges which I will recommend to anyone willing to try it out.
I tore open the bag and opened it up to smell the aroma of coffee and proceeded to dip my finger in for a taste. It has a sweet coffee flavour with a slight saltiness to it and I believe given enough time I could eat the whole bag purely from tasting it in small dosages.
I have always thought what coffee would taste like with a bit of saltiness but never have been willing to try it until having a product that is suited for it such as IN-SALT salted espresso mix. So naturally, the first thing I tried the artisan salt mix on was a coffee. I added a layer of frothed milk on top of my coffee and sprinkled the mix over the top. I took a big mouthful and was disappointed that by the time I noted the IN-SALT flavour the coffee quickly overpowered it and all I could taste after was my coffee. So I added more of the espresso mix to the coffee and took another mouthful which didn't really seem to help it any more than the first taste.
I then decided to add the mix on top of a carrot cake muffin which is where the mix shone. I took a bite of the muffin and the notes of coffee with salt and cake fused perfectly. After I had finished the muffin I had to try it on another one just t make sure it wasn't just a fluke which it proved it defiantly wasn't. My mind wandered off on all the other ways I could use this mix and I will defiantly be putting some to the test.
Overall IN-SALT has come up with a range of innovative salt products that I am looking forward to trying more of. I highly recommend this to anyone who is experimental in their cooking ways or anyone who enjoys savoury and sweet flavours combined.
The idea of a salted sugar (or a sugared salt?) seemed seriously weird to us, although I then had to admit to finding that salted caramel is pretty good, so maybe it was not so weird after all. So we opened the packet in anticipation of finding a new taste we would all enjoy. Only one way to find out! I started by using a teaspoon to remove a small quantity and then tipping some on to each person's palm. One by one, we gave it the taste test. Then - thumbs up all round. Finally, I tried it myself. At first, I tasted only salt and wondered why they were all so enthusiastic. Then the espresso flavour kicked in and almost completely took over. Delicious!
I remember encountering a similar combination when I tasted dried salted plums - on two occasions, once in Mexico and once in Hong Kong - and was floored by the double-whammy of salt followed by sweet. So I guess this is the New Zealand equivalent of a unique taste sensation and one I think I could fast become addicted to. My companions were equally impressed and since they all have very different food preferences, we could be on a winner here.
For the first session, I used the salt sprinkled on top of an otherwise very plain commercially produced pavlova which I had topped with cream and mandarin segments. This was a quickly assembled dessert which was almost completely demolished as six of us helped ourselves to generous portions and then came back for seconds (or, as in Mr Six' case, thirds)! Everyone loved the effect; two of us even added an extra sprinkle to our own servings as we like a fuller-bodied coffee flavour. The soft texture of the pavlova contrasted nicely with the crunch of the salt; this was particularly marked when the mix was sprinkled on at the end rather than being stirred through the cream as it retained its crispness better.
We tried it with other desserts on two subsequent nights, once with banana custard (which the children especially enjoyed), and once with a golden steamed pudding, again with custard. It seemed to be tailor-made for pairing with custard, melting into it and making it slightly darker but with the odd crystal still apparent. We tried it with cocoa too, thinking we would end up with a mocha drink, but this was one use which did not appeal: the coffee and salt were completely overwhelmed by the cocoa so we could not taste them at all.
The product has a long shelf life although I can't really see there being too much left over in our house anyway. The pack is quite small but after using it in three different desserts and as an additive in two cups of cocoa, I still have nearly half a packet left. I am not sure how much a packet holds as it is not noted anywhere - I checked on the website too but the size is not recorded there either. This would be my one reservation given that some people on restricted diets need the nutritional contents identified by weight as well as name. But apart from that, I am most impressed with this product and plan to buy it again - and possibly, try some of the other varieties in the range if I get the opportunity.
