The cashew is a peculiar nut - it's not even a nut, technically speaking. It grows wild in steamy tropical jungles, dangling from the bottom of a fruit, encased in a nasty toxic shell that is used for making drain cleaners and the like.
It roasts and squashes relatively easily and produces a softly textured butter with a slightly sweet flavour.
We don't add anything to our cashew butter and we recommend you keep it on the top shelf away from the kids. It's more than just moreish and just a teaspoon of it squashes that voice in your head that demands sweet satisfaction.
Product reviews...
I love the Pics packaging on their products. Its great that this is in glass and the jars are great to reuse or they can be recycled when you have finished with them. The packaging has a great picture of what cashews come from and a description which I didn't know so I like that we are now more informed about where cashews come from and what they look like before they arrive I our pantry. This product is 100% cashews with nothing else so its 100% goodness.
When I opened the jar there was a lot of oil on top which I stirred in and the mixture was just beautifully creamy. I had to have a taste straight out of the jar and it was just divine. Perfect texture and consistency and tastes absolutely amazing. Better than really good actually Pics! We ate this lots of different ways. I do a lot of raw food baking so I have used it in muesli bars, Bliss balls, cashew and date slice as well as in my cooking. I used this in a chicken stir fry and a Thai curry. We have all enjoyed it spread on pancakes and on toast and it has been a hit in the girls sandwiches as well. Use wise this is a brilliant product and the jar has certainly had good use.
I will definitely buy this again as even tough it is pricey you get what you pay for and it would take a lot of cashews to make this much yourself. This really is a divine product that has many uses. I can definitely recommend this and its worth trying.
I have heard a lot of good things about Pic's but I'd never actually tried any of their products before so I was extremely excited to receive some of their cashew butter to review. I love cashew nuts and I always have them on hand for a quick snack. I also use a lot of nut butter in my baking.
The first thing I noticed upon opening the jar was how silky smooth it looked. I couldn't wait to try it so a spoonful straight from the jar it was. It was so good, smooth and creamy without being obviously oily. The flavour is sweet and subtle and you know you're onto a winner when the only ingredients are cashew nuts. The consistency is probably runnier than most people are used to, but it spreads wonderfully and is a dream to bake with. I used it to make some gluten free cashew and white chocolate cookies which were big hit with my family, but it is equally good slathered on a piece of toast.
I like the simple packaging with the inclusion of how cashew nuts grow. It's a rather small jar and a bit on the pricey side but then nuts are expensive and you are paying for a quality product.
I didn't realise that I didn't know much about cashews until my husband and I read the side of the Cashew Butter jar. It is amazing what quirky information you can find on a food label! I found that the cashew grows at the end of a cashew apple. Funny thing is that although I didn't know that before, I hadn't ever thought about it! This prompted me to jump onto Google to find out more about this nut that we love in our family! It turns out that the cashew apple is also edible. I think some more internet surfing will be required now in order to find out more on this subject!
Back to the matter at hand - cashew butter. Just like I didn't know how the cashew nut grows, I didn't know that cashew butter existed. I had previously enjoyed almond butter and some versions of peanut butter (I am a bit fussy in this area but I think the key for me is that the butter needs to contain 100% nuts for me to be happy). A big tick for Pic's Cashew Butter, as it contains only nuts. The texture was very similar to the almond butter in the Pic's range. It is rather smooth and sticky. With this in mind, it pays not to get too much in your mouth at one time, otherwise it can prove to stick to the inside of your mouth! A friend of mine got very excited when she saw a photo I posted on Facebook showing the cashew butter. She also didn't know that cashew butter existed. She was keen to give it a go as she is a Pic's fan.
I was running out of time for breakfast the other morning before dropping the kids off for school and I don't cope well without breakfast...so I had a quick think and out came three things. The Pic's Cashew Butter, fresh fruit (pear) and desiccated coconut chips. This was a great combination (and it sorted out the need for food before the drive to school!). The other night I also put out some Cashew Butter apples, pears, and veg sticks. The kids loved it. I had to ration how much the kids could have as they wanted to keep on going until the jar was empty!! If only the kids were allowed to take nut butters to school as it would make a great dip to go with veggies and fruit in their lunch boxes.
The cashew butter is 100% nuts and doesn't include any emulsifiers. With this in mind, the butter can easily separate. A quick flick with a spoon mixes it back to the correct consistency and produces a very smooth textured spread. The butter has a nutty flavour and I found that when I paid attention to that flavour, it had an obvious cashew taste. Our family enjoys all kinds of nuts and cashews are no exception, so we were all pretty happy with that. Given that it is a small jar, the price is quite high. As nuts are expensive, I can appreciate the cost of manufacturing the product. I think the idea would be, just like the almond version, to enjoy it in small amounts and watch the kids as they are likely to sneak into the cupboard and dig their spoons into the jar. It might pay to hide it on the top shelf and only bring it out under supervision...especially if you have a nut fan in the house!
I was introduced to cashew butter when I was a kid. I was visiting family and they had a jar of it with the rest of their spreads. I was amazed, having never seen anything like it and I had some on toast. It was delicious and I always looked for it, whenever I visited again. So when Pic's cashew butter came up for review I had to get my paws on some. I know Pic's peanut butters well and I know what a great quality product they are.
Seeing the jar I noticed it was quite a lot smaller than the peanut butter jars, but considering the price difference between peanuts and cashews this was hardly surprising. Just as the price of $14.50 a jar, was unsurprising. I mean, it would cost a lot to make your own cashew butter and these guys know what they are doing. I'd likely ruin $15 worth of cashews just trying to make my own.
Inside the jar, the cashew butter was oily and easy for spreading. This was different to the cashew butter I have had in the past that was almost chalky. The flavour was amazing. Cashews are very subtle with a nutty sweet flavour. I had this on toast and it brought back so many happy memories.
Later in the week I added it to a curry we were having with Leena's Spices. I substituted it for ground nuts that were optional in the recipe. Although the curry was very flavourful already, I noticed the difference to texture that the nut butter added and the richness of the sauce because of it. I also added it to a satay style dinner and it was really tasty in that too.
Anything you use peanut butter in, you could use cashew butter instead. Though I still prefer it on toast with a bit of butter. I tried it Reece's style. That is, with chocolate on top as well, but the cashew was overpowered by the chocolate. So I'm definitely going to finish this jar as nature intended it, plain on toast. That is if I can resist taking to the jar with a spoon. It's highly likely that I will replace this jar when it is empty.
"Nutty butter on toast" is so cliche... and I don't really make satay because I can't get the spice mix right... so I was a little stumped. I REALLY like this spread on hot, buttered toast but for the review I wanted to do something more. Because I have been watching my weight a bit recently - after losing a lot of weight I didn't want to pile it back on with bad eating habits - I have been making protein smoothies to replace the occasional meal. So, that's what I went with.
1 ripe banana, some tinned peaches in lite juice, some frozen coconut cream shaved into a sorbet consistency, (to replace the usual ice-cream), a tablespoon of honey, a tablespoon of healthy 'drinking chocolate' replacement, and a heaped tablespoon of the Cashew Butter - all blended into a smoothie... YUM! This made a generous serving for two and it was very tasty indeed! It tasted like a snickers bar thickshake, but had nothing "naughty" in it. I found it very filling, and a great, if pricey, use for this product.
Cashews are not cheap to buy - they are a very labour-intensive crop and we're consuming them in ever-growing amounts which forces the prices up. Keeping that in mind, the price of this jar is reasonable and tolerable, if not easy to cope with. I'd like to say it's too costly and they should bring the price down, but that would be entirely unfair to Pic's - they have a good product pitched at a price that is fair. it's not their fault the raw materials are so pricey, but I think this is a product that is only going to appeal to a small, well-heeled segment of the market. These days, most people in NZ couldn't really justify or afford a product in this range.
Overall, well worth the price tag, if you can afford it. For something as a special treat it will fit the bill nicely, and is a wonderful replacement for those with peanut allergies.
I love cashew nuts; in fact, I remember being introduced to them by my father when I was a very small child, and being told that they were "special occasion" treats. I have often thought about that when I bought cashew nuts as an adult - they are more expensive than other nuts, but as that "special occasion" item they are worth the price. So when I found that there was a cashew butter available, I was eager to see what it would be like.
I had two friends visiting so decided I would seek their opinions of the product. We passed the jar around and sniffed the contents, then we each tasted a small amount. The consensus was what I had expected - when the jar was first opened, there was no mistaking this smell for peanut butter or anything else remotely like it; the cashew made its presence known immediately. The subsequent tasting was equally definite: a full-bodied, delicious cashew taste. Everyone commented on how creamy it was and how it would be nice served not only as a spread but also as an ingredient in a range of dishes, both savoury and sweet.
I had thought about how to serve it in an original way, and decided I would try a flavoured icecream. I had already made some icecream myself using fresh cream, and before it was quite frozen I had mixed in some apricot jam and four teaspoons of cashew butter (to a litre of icecream mix). After giving it a good stir to mix in the jam and butter, I put it back into the freezer to finish thickening as it froze.
My friends were ecstatic about the new dessert. One said she appreciated the "marvellous" flavour of the cashew and the extra "zing" provided by the apricot. The other said she thought the combination was perfect, and she liked the way the fruit and nut flavours blended perfectly, forming a flavoursome but non-invasive background to the icecream. Both agreed it was quite rich so helpings should not be too big. I think if I had used a commercial plain icecream as the base it might not have been quite so rich so I might try that next time. I will certainly be serving up the same dessert on future occasions given its success.
The price was felt to be a little on the high side, but fair given that we had used less than a quarter of one jar for the first tasting followed by the icecream trial (which made a quantity sufficient for six people). We also realised that cashews are not cheap, so that needs to be reflected in the retail costing. And of course, as I have already confirmed, this is a "special occasion" treat which warrants that little extra outlay.
We love cashews and I have a household of peanut butter fans so I thought Pic's Cashew Butter would be a hit with us. We love the Pic's peanut butters. Since being given it to review I have seen it in two different supermarkets at $11.99, significantly cheaper than stated in the listing above. It is also a similar price to another pure cashew butter on the shelf.
It is packaged with the distinctive Pic's star lid which the kids love. I was impressed to see that it was 100% cashew. There were no fillers, added oil or salt. The jar was easy enough to open which was great with impatient kids waiting for breakfast. It was very smooth. The consistency of tahini. The kids weren't keen to lick it off the spoon but enjoyed it on hot toast.
I used half the jar to make a pesto. It only used three ingredients: fresh basil, Parmesan cheese and cashew butter. This was so much quicker than usual as I didn't have to grind cashews. It was also healthier as I didn't have to add any oil to moisten it. I was very pleased with the result (both taste and texture) and it was all eaten just as quickly as the usual recipe.
The price for a jar is much more than peanut butter but when you consider the cost of cashews is much higher it is understandable. The cost would mean for us that it will not be a constant item in our pantry but would be a nice addition for gift hamper. I am thinking of Fathers Day coming up as I am always stuck for ideas for the men in my life. It is important to note this is made in the same place as peanut and other tree products so caution is best if you have allergies.
After recently trying Pic's Really Good Peanut Butter and being converted, especially after my fussy Miss 3 "don't like peanut butter" was a fan of it I was really looking forward to trying out the Pic's Cashew Butter, as when it comes to eating nuts cashews are my favourite, so I had absolutely no doubt in my mind that this was going to be amazing!
The first thing which I noticed about the jar is that it is considerably smaller in size than your average jar of peanut butter, being only 195g, especially for the rather steep price tag. However, knowing the difference in price between buying peanuts as opposed to cashew nuts I can see the reasoning behind this as cashews are considerably more expensive to buy! I also loved that being made from cashews it provides an allergy friendly spread alternative to those who are allergic to peanuts and not other nuts, such a great idea!
Opening up the jar for the first time I noticed a small layer of oil on the top (which the label states may happen due to separation over time) I gave a quick stir and the problem was solved. Smelling the jar contents I could certainly smell the cashews, however in my opinion cashews don't have the strongest smell, I dipped my finger into the jar for a taste and was impressed by the flavour, I could tell that it was a cashew butter, however personally I didn't find the flavour to really be much different to that of Pic's peanut butter. I got my partner to have a try and on asking him what he'd eaten he said "peanut butter", when I said it was made of cashew's he unfortunately said he wouldn't have known. The texture was smooth and creamy, perhaps a little more stringy than normal peanut butter I thought. I love that the contents of the jar are 100% cashews so you know it's gotta be good for you.
This spread is so versatile to use, my partner and I have been enjoying it on toast, and Miss 3 on sandwiches with banana. I decided to experiment with this on several occasions and used it in place of peanut butter in satay chicken, this worked amazingly well and melted so much quicker than peanut butter did and it gave a really nice taste to the dish, Miss 3 even ate all her dinner up which says a lot, and my partner thought it was creamier than usual. I also used this to make a satay chicken pizza and found that baked in an oven this product had no problems. A dollop of the cashew butter has also been added to my families morning smoothies and has always gone down a treat. One of my work colleagues tried this on their toast one day and has since bought herself a jar - she usually buys the Pic's almond butter but decided she liked the cashew butter better.
There really are so many ways in which this product can be used from baking, to spreads and as a flavour enhancer to any main meal. As much as I really did love this cashew butter, it is probably not something that i'd purchase again myself unless needing to create a peanut free meal for visitors, just because of the price, and knowing that I can get a great peanut butter product from Pic's for a fraction of the price, however it is something I will recommend to those I know who are allergic to peanuts.
