I love the relationship that my Dad has with my children and the front cover of this book really made me think of one of my precious kids holding their special Grandad's hand. My dad (my children's grandad) is quite sick at the moment and this made it even more poignant that I was able to share this book with my children. It was a great chance to reflect back on the relationship they have with him.
The two rhinos on the front of the book show a very special bond between a grandfather and grandchild. The eye contact says a lot about the feeling that will be portrayed in the book. It is very special. Throughout the book the eyes of each animal stand out and give out the same feeling of love as is shown at the front of the book. The illustrations are delightful and show that spending time with a grandchild is such an important thing to do. I know that all my children want from their grandfathers is time to play and share together.
Animals are used in the book to show different things that various grandpas do with this grandchildren. Many of these activities were ones that my own children could relate to. Rhyme is used effectively in the book and my children enjoyed working out what the last word of each verse would be.
As I read this with my children, they started to talk about some of the things they love doing with their own grandfathers and the best memories they have. The page with the cats and the rockets was one that Mr Six thought was of particular interest as he often role plays with his grandad about going to outer space. Miss Four liked the page about growing things in the garden together. She is takes every opportunity to spend time in the garden with her grandad. They both LOVED the spelling bee page! They giggled for a while over that one.
The book ends with the same beautiful illustration of the two rhinos. It brought the book to a perfect ending. I had a lovely feeling as I looked at that picture. I think that the book is great for children and it is also great for the person reading the book to the children. It was a chance for me to remember my own relationship with my own grandfather and to also think my dad's relationship with my children. It is a very special book.
This book is another amazing book from Scholastic. Miss almost 4 was really excited to spot this book in our review package that arrived. The first thing she said was "look Mum, its a Mummy and a baby Rhino is that what it is about?". I explained to her it was called Grandpa is great and that perhaps its Grandpa Rhino and one of his Grandchildren. She had a bit of a giggle and then begun to tell me about her Grandad.
Right from the get go this book drew in Miss almost 4's attention and she was glued. Each page had a different animal on it and it was very similar i.e it was always a Grandpa animal with a baby animal. Each page also talked about the things the animals liked about their Grandpa's and the fun things they all got up to together. I found that this story line was perfect for Miss 4. She was able to talk about each different activity that the animals liked and then was able to relate it to herself and the things she really enjoyed doing with her Grandad. Some of the things the animals liked to do were the same as what Miss 4 enjoyed doing with her Grandad, so this gave her a bit of a giggle that her and the animals like the same thing.
I really love the simplicity of this story and how relatable it is to different children and also different walks of life. Everyone has a favourite thing that they did with their grandad/grandma so it strikes a lot of happy conversations. I love the bold yet simple pictures and how uncluttered the pages are. I found the story to be a great length and that it held my daughters attention for the entire story. This is a book that I think we will read over and over in our house. I think the price of $21 is really reasonable for such a great story.
