Lewis Road Creamery Fresh Chocolate Milk is pretty delicious I must say. I am an avid milk drinker and love a fresh cup of chocolate milk as a treat once in awhile. When this first hit the shelves the price was ridiculous and this "liquid gold" sold out quickly! Once the hype finally died down I had a go of this chocolate milk and enjoyed every second of it. The price of Lewis Road Creamery Fresh Chocolate Milk has gone down to around $6.50 for 750mL since its introduction into the market. This is far more affordable than when it was first produced and within the budget for a treat sometimes.

The texture and taste is nice - the perfect mixture of chocolate and creamy milk. In saying this, I find Puhoi Chocolate Milk (a similarly priced competitor) just slightly better. Their chocolate milk is more rich and indulgent for the once in a while treat I desire. I personally enjoyed richer chocolatey drinks so sip on this and indulge with every sip. For those who may find it a little too sweet, I suggest adding milk. I discovered this trick when wanted to make my last few mouthfuls go fewer, and the ilk was equally still delicious, and I got a little extra.

After moving to this country ten years ago, I could never find the right chocolate milk. And man there weren't choices to chose from. Everything tasted nasty or too milky and not enough chocolate. I don't need chocolate milk everyday by any means, but sometimes just a nice fix now and then would be a treat. It had been so long. So when I heard of this "liquid gold" I was skeptical. I mean I wasn't going to get my hopes up just to have them dashed. The hype was so massive I thought surely it wasn't as good as all that? I WAS WRONG.

This chocolate-y drinky goodness is a dream come true. It's soooooo good. Expensive, but damn good. It's a lovely treat and there's no point buying the little bottle. You know that once you get it home you'll have to share. It's the perfect recipe and I'm not ashamed to say that it's beaten every chocolate milk I've ever had. Finally, New Zealand children and adults alike can rejoice. A chocolate milk worthy of the name. Also, worthy of the name "liquid gold". I mean we can't call it "liquid brown" now can we?

Lewis Creamery don't change a thing!

I recall when this chocolate milk first hit the shelves, it was named as liquid gold, the hype around it was unbelievable, shops were selling out of it within minutes of it hitting the shelves. Some places needed to hire extra security for it, others had to limit consumers to the number of bottles they could purchase per purchase. The demand was so great, that the company could not keep up with it. People were going crazy, unbelievably crazy, for this so called liquid gold. The hype was unreal. The price was sheer craziness, yet people still wanted it...they needed it!

Available in 2 different sizes; 300ml and 750ml. At one stage the 750ml was just shy of $10.00 per bottle, while the smaller one was almost $5.00 per bottle, and yet still people shelled out these crazy prices. I just could not justify spending that amount of money on a chocolate flavoured milk. No milk, in my mind, was worth spending that much money for. $10.00 is an 8th of my very tiny weekly grocery budget, so it was simply not justifiable. The kids begged for it, but it simply could not be done.

Then one-day out of the blue my husband was gifted 3 small bottles of this 'liquid gold'...we are a family of 5, so my husband very careful divided those 3 small bottles into 5 equal shares. It was funny watching everyone very slowly trying their tiny little sample. It was as if everyone was aware of the price, and did not want to waste a single drop, but also needed to savor every mouthful. Its a rich creamy chocolate milk, no word of a lie there, but I still would not spend the asking price on it. Yes it is nice, but I'm just not sure the hype was worth it hahaha if it came down in price though, I imagine that this would possibly be a firm favorite. Would really love to try it in a choc chippie cream log.

When this was first released there was a lot of hype around how great this drink is and how it is one of the best milk chocolate tasting drinks out there. It kept popping up in my news feed on Facebook with various friends and other pages talking about how good it was yet very hard to source and places constantly selling out after they had just put it out on the shelves. Some places had a limit on how many you could purchase which was a maximum of two per person per day. I saw people talk about travelling out of their way to other supermarkets, diaries and service stations in attempt to purchase it and try for themselves.

After a few weeks of it released I finally saw it in stock at the supermarket and I purchased the 300ml to try and although I am not a big fan of milk I thought since It was chocolate flavored I might possibly enjoy it as it sounded similar to a milkshake which I do enjoy.

I personally did not like it after the first sip, but tried again just to be sure. Maybe it is cause I am type 1 Diabetic and these days sweet things I don't enjoy as much as the sweetness can be more distinctive than to others but I just couldn't get past the sweet taste and decided I wasn't going to have anymore. Also as a note this is something that most type 1 Diabetics would have have to take insulin for because of its sugar content so do keep that in mind if you are considering having it.

Also not overly enjoying milk could be why I don't like it but am somewhat confused as to why there was so much fuss about it as it didn't stand out from any other milk chocolate drinks I've had before, in fact I would almost say this tasted worse than others I've had before!!!

I couldn't help but hear about this milk after it had hit our shelves, it was literally all over my Facebook news feed as well as making it into publications such as the Herald. I'm not a huge fan of chocolate milk, though I do like a little chocolate now and then, and so I wasn't in a rush to buy any, especially when I heard how crazed everyone was going over the stuff. Finally, one day when we were in the shop we saw half a dozen or so bottles actually on the shelf, so I grabbed one for my husband and I to share (I couldn't justify buying more than that at $3.79!!!!!) and one for my friend (who'd kept missing out and paid me back for it).

Split the bottle with my husband, gave my share a swig and thought to myself "what the heck is all the fuss about!" and after voicing this to my husband, had his agreement. To me this tasted like glorified milk, a tiny taste of chocolate (even after a big shake up) and certainly NOT worth $3.79 for such a small bottle. I have had many a chocolate milk drink and when it comes down to things, this drink is way, way, waaaaaaaaaaaaay down the bottom of my list and I am more than happy to leave it on the shelf for someone else to buy.

I love Whittakers chocolate and I also love chocolate milk so when I first heard about the making of Lewis Road Creamery Fresh chocolate Milk I thought it was a match made of heaven. So when this chocolate milk first hit the shelf, New Zealanders seemed to be going mad for it, with a limit being put on how many bottles you were able to buy in one go and security guards even being put in front of the chiller section to guard the chocolate milk, as several fights had broken out nationwide around who was going to get there hot little hands on that last bottle of liquid gold. For this crazy reason it took me almost a month to get my first bottle to sample.

Finally the day came and I decided since having waited so long that I would purchase to bottles of this chocolate milk. My first initial thought was that the price seemed quite steep for a small bottle of chocolate milk, especially as this was roughly the same price as a 2 litre bottle of Primo or similar. The milk comes is a clear plastic bottle, so when looking through I could see that a thick layer of chocolate had settled on the bottom of the bottle so I gave it a good shake to mix it in, it actually took quite a few good shakes to get it mixed properly.

Upon my first sip I could definitely see what all the hype was about it wasn't like that of similar chocolate milk which can sometimes taste quite artificial or 'fake'. The Lewis Road Creamery Chocolate Milk tasted like I was drinking a drink made from silk, it was so smooth and velvety and had such a creamy texture to it and I could definitely taste that it was made with Whitaker's chocolate. I decided with my other bottle of chocolaty goodness to take it to the next level and turn it into a chocolate milkshake by pouring it into a blender with some vanilla ice cream this was divine and made a really yummy milk shake which would be fantastic to have on a hot summers day. My local cupcake shop has joined the craze and made Lewis Road Chocolate cupcakes complete with frosting which taste super yummy.

I will definitely be buying more of this milk even though it's a little pricey. Lewis Road Creamery have also brought out 2 new flavoured milks to there range Vanilla and Coffee, I can't wait to try the Vanilla when I manage to find it, hopefully it'll compare to that of the chocolate.
