Searching for lunchbox fillers that are healthy, suitable for daycare and are allergy friendly in regards to being egg, dairy, citrus and sugar free can often pose quite a problem especially when this is a rather new thing to me. I had been making my own version of dried fruit roll ups over the last couple of weeks for my daughter by pureeing up fruit and spreading it onto a baking tray lined with baking paper and baking on low in the oven for 4 hours until it was dried out and ready to cut up, though this was a easy process it was a rather lengthy process which sometimes I didn't really have the time to do, however to my daughter these were like lollies that she could eat so I persevered so that she still felt she could have something special to eat. When I saw these Fruit bites in the supermarket which appeared similar to what I made I decided to give them a go for the week and purchased the apple with crispy rice variety.
I was drawn to the box as it was bright green and eye catching with a picture of a apple and lots of words which would totally appeal to parents wanting healthy choices, 88% fruit ingredients and No refined sugar it read, it also had a 3 star health rating which I thought wasn't to bad really as this isn't something I often find on packaging. Each box contains 6 easy to open snack packs with about 10 or so small, bite sized fruit pieces.
Miss 2 and I ripped open a pack of the apple bites to try on my first try I have to admit that I was hit by a burst of what tasted to me like sour apple (but I guess they are sugar free so that was kind of to be expected), after the initial flavour hit I got used to the taste and found the taste to actually be quite nice, tangy but not sour, you could definitely taste and see the crispy rice which added to the texture and taste of the fruit. Miss 2 ate them happily demolishing the rest of the snack pack while saying "mmmmmmm yummy lolly lolly" she couldn't get enough of them and asked for me, she wasn't to happy when I said no, and has recognised the packaging so these are one of those products that need to be hidden away in a secret location!
I would definitely buy these again, though I think it would be cheaper to make my own, that and id get a lot more for my money, they are definitely a sometimes treat in my book to although portrayed a healthy snack. Id like to give the strawberry and apple or the peach and apple varieties a go one day also, a definite hit with children that's for sure and allergy friendly too!
