Hellers Sticky Ginger Beef Sausages product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsHellers once again handed over the reins to the New Zealand public and encouraged people to dream up their ultimate idea for a new sausage flavour. The 'Sticky Ginger Beef' - a combination of ginger, onions, garlic, coriander, soy sauce and brown sugar was picked out of more than 2,500 entries. It's Hellers first Asian inspired gourmet sausage.

How to Cook
Hellers Sticky Ginger Beef sausage is best cooked by frying, grilling or barbecuing on a medium heat turning often until the outside is golden brown. Juices should run clear.

I have been searching for these Hellers Sticky Ginger Beef Sausages for quite some time during my regular visits to the supermarket, each time being sadly dissapointed that I have been unable to find them, and as I found out tonight as I enjoyed them for my tea there is a reason for this, that being that they are really, really good and you'd be crazy not to buy them!

Tonight I cooked the Hellers Sticky Ginger Sausages in my acti-fryer which took 12 minutes from defrosted, and they were perfectly cooked, crisp skin on the outside with a juicy, meaty, flavorsome sausage on the inside. I served these with a side of chips and a salad and even Miss 2 enjoyed them.

I can imagine cooking these on the BBQ in the upcoming summer months when we have visitors around or as a quick weekend lunch served up on a piece of bread and teamed up with either steak, BBQ or tomato sauce. My whole family enjoyed these sausages for dinner tonight you could definitely taste the ginger without it being to overpowering, and they didn't seem to be dripping with fat or to be filled with fillers like a lot of sausages tend to be. We have tried many of the different sausages that Hellers have and I have to say I think these are up there as one of the best we have tried yet.

I will definitely be buying these again when I see them, and if I can will buy extras to keep in the freezer, good products sell out fast!

Spring is in the air and have been spending lots of time out in the garden over the school holidays. Every now and then, we feel like something hot for lunch rather than salad sandwiches or the like! Today I decided that lunch time was the perfect time to fire up the BBQ and try the Hellers Sticky Ginger sausages that were in the fridge. A good old sausage sizzle is great at any time of the year and today was one of those perfect times!

My husband popped them on the hot plate of the BBQ and cooked them up. He found that quite a bit of fat came out of them. There was quite a pool evident on the hot plate. I would have to say that it is better out than in!

My husband and I really enjoyed the flavour and the texture of the sausages. We found that they weren't too fatty when we eating them. I guess that a lot of the fat came out during cooking. We found that they were an exciting change to your standard old sausage. They had a good level of ginger flavour to them, without being overpowering. They worked perfectly with a bit of bread and butter with tomato sauce drizzled over the top. I also found that they weren't too rich (I can find beef sausages a bit on the rich side). The kids weren't that keen on them, however they did enjoy the Hellers Porker Yorker sausages that we cooked last week.

We are a family of four and assuming that everyone in the family likes them, 6 sausages is borderline as to whether it is enough to feed us all. My husband and I are ok with just two sausages (even though we both enjoyed these sausages so much that we found it hard to stop at two!), Miss 3 will usually only eat one, and Mr 4 usually likes 2 sausages. With that in mind, 6 is just enough for us now. Once the kids are bigger, we will need at least eight sausages to feed the family.

The downside of most sausages is that they are bulked up with lots of extra ingredients, which are obviously deemed necessary to make the product what it is. These sausages are the same as most others on the market and have lots of "colours and numbers". My preference is to eat actual food and ingredients that I recognise! Having said this, we really enjoyed them, so I will have to put that preference aside at the moment!

This was our second opportunity to try these sausages (we purchased some at the Waikato Home Show). They are a product that we will be hunting down again!

Whoever dreamt up Sticky Ginger Sausages is on to it! what a winner. I so often go to the supermarket wanting something different to throw on the BBQ and get disappointed at the lack of different flavours. I went a week or so ago and these little beauties jumped out at me, I thought wow that is interesting, gotta give these a go.

Awesome, what a treat on the BBQ, something that tastes different but also looks different, the colour is also a stand out in my opinion. I love colourful food so this works perfectly. The flavour is spot on, not too rich with ginger but enough that it makes you go wow these taste great. Definitely beats the boring old Pork and Beef sausages that fill the supermarket shelves.

They only come in a small pack of 6, would be cool if they did a 8-10 pack which is great if you have a few friends over. Those that did try this also loved it so Hellers you have a winner in my opinion. The packaging is good as the title stands out and makes you want to buy them. Price was a little more than standard sausages but you would expect that with a new flavour on the market. Good work Hellers for coming up with the competition!

I was so excited to pick up some of these Hellers Sticky Ginger Beef sausages yesterday to review. I went straight to the supermarket and bought some potatoes. For me, sausages equal comfort food and they need cheesy mashed potato with them. I generally don't go for a beef sausage. I like my sausages to be pork. But I was prepared to try these as I had heard great stuff about them.

I boiled my potatoes and prepared my cheesy mash. I used a frying pan to cook these sausages. I didn't put any oil into the pan and I found that I didn't need any oil. The sausages released oil as they were cooking almost immediately. I cooked them for 4 - 5 minutes on one side and then flipped them onto each other side for a minute or two to cook right through. I found this easy as the sausages kinda had a cube shape to them, so they didn't roll around in the pan as much as I would have expected.

After they were finished cooking, there was a lot of oil in the pan and I did find that more was released from the sausage when I cut some up for the kids. They tend to eat sausages in chunks rather than whole on their plate. Miss 8 had two pieces of sausage, but declared them too spicy for her and wouldn't eat any more.

Miss 3 on the other hand didn't want her potato or her vegetables. She ate all her sausage and asked for more. She loved the taste and would have been happy for a plate of sausage over anything else. The mister enjoyed the flavour and said that while it wasn't spicy to him, he could see why Miss 8 didn't like the spice-level. For me I could definitely taste an oriental flavour to this. There seemed to be ginger in there and chili and it did have an asian kind of flavour. I enjoyed it and would have eaten more if there had been some. I think they were a little oily, but that could have been solved if I had used a paper towel on them before serving.

Given that Miss 3, and the mister and I enjoyed them I would be tempted to buy these again. We can always give Miss 8 chicken nuggets! For something a bit different, I'm glad we gave this a go and I will definitely be looking out for them when we go shopping next.

It is not often I find a sausage that captures me so strongly that I just wish I could eat them for every meal, every day, for the rest of my life. This sausage did that... but I did find it a little confusing that the packaging describes the flavour as a blend of ginger and garlic - neither of which appear in the ingredient list. Frankly... I don't care. Whether it's a trick of chemistry or just an oversight on the part of the label designer, I could taste ginger, and garlic, and I loved it!

I was going to try these with a plain or cheesy mash, but found myself with no spuds in the house and no time to waste, so I did a good ol' Kiwi Fry-up for these. Having put these in the fridge instead of the freezer, I didn't need to wait a day or two for them to thaw, nor boil them from frozen and risk all the flavoursome oils leaking away, and in the end I was really thankful for that, as they came out so full of flavour my taste buds thought they were in heaven.

Frying these up first to get some colour on them allowed me to transfer some of the flavour to the eggs, tomato and bacon I planned to add. While it sounds like a heart attack waiting to happen, I was really pleased with how little grease and oil these released - a sure sign that these are retaining all their flavour without relying on oils and grease to carry it. Heck, the bacon released more in the way of oils and grease! (Which is why that was cooked second, so that I didn't have to add any for the eggs and thick-sliced tomato.)

As you can see from the photo, this turned out great! Even after I cut the end off one sausage to show how meaty it was, and how little it had shrink because of fillers and the rubbish you find in most mass-produced snagglers - it didn't degrease itself. Awesome!

Overall, my only problem with the pack was that it only had 6 in it. They should make packs of 50 or so,, so that you can really enjoy them! In the coming months, as Summer once again peeks it's warm head around the global corner, these will be an absolute hit at any BBQ you take them to... but be careful. Once just a whiff of them reaches everyone's noses, you had better hope you have lightning reflexes, or brought enough for everyone, because the steaks will be left to carbonise on the grill as everyone dives for these! Will perfectly complement a nice mild potato salad, or a leafy green salad equally as well.
