Product reviews...
We use paprika all the time but have never used smoked paprika before until we came across this wee beauty! The smell, the taste, the smokiness, the colour, everything about this product is top notch! We cook a lot of Mexican dishes so happy that I can now use the correct product in recipies as it gives cooking a new flavour of depth. The colour looks awesome sprinkled on a salad that has eggs as it stands out and tastes good too.
Love the natural cardboard box that the product comes in, I am all for simplicity, I also think the box is a decent size, you can actually get a spoon into it without getting caught up in the paper bag like the other types of boxes. Jars look great but you can never get the spoon to fit. Awesome that it can be resealed as how often do spices loose the flavouring because the box is left open. I personally think it stands out on the shelf as it is so simple, price is really good, quality is excellent...what more can you ask for.
I look forward to more and more of this range, or perhaps a refill bag that you can buy and slot into your paper box, the less packaging the better!
I jumped at the chance to try this and while the packaging is boring (they need something on the front to let people know its organic), the reseal bag is great but hard to get into at times and the product colours your hands. Do not rub your eyes before you have had a chance to wash them either. I'd love to see this in a jar, along with these to refill them.
My husband claims to know his smoked paprika's and wouldn't shut up about how good it smells. We have taken to adding it to everyday cooking just to add some life and excitement to it, including to our mashed potatoes. I've been TOLD once it is near out or comes on special, that I HAVE to get more. It's even been considered as a christmas gift for our friends and family.
One thing I have learnt with this is that a little goes a long way. Do not over sprinkle or add too much of this as you may end up with a bit of a weird taste or slightly tingling lips. Price wise, I think they are almost ripping themselves off because it is so good but I struggled to find it at a quick glance at my local supermarket.
I have never really used paprika before, my wife had before she met me but since then it hasn't really been in our house so I figured why not give it a new try? My first thought on the packaging was that it wasn't anything particularly great, it wouldn't catch my eye in the shop and I tested this out next time I went shopping and whilst I did see it, everything else was grabbing my attention more. The bag inside is a good strength plastic and a ziplock close means that you can keep it fresh, I did find it a little hard now and then though to get the bag back in the box.
I decided to use this on some roast potatoes for my first try, I mixed it with some chicken salt and then coated the potatoe chunks in it before drizzling a little oil on it and leaving it to cook. My three kids and my wife all gobbled it down, it really seemed to help bring out the flavor in the chicken salt. Since then I have added it to my pasta a couple of times and once when I made a pasta bake I sprinkled some on top on the cheese and it really added to the cheese beautifully.
This is a good price and I can use it in a range of dishes so I would buy this.
So I received some of 'Mrs Rogers Smoked Paprika' to trail and review and I was pleasantly surprised at how good it was.
I do have to say that the packaging for this product did not stand out very well so if you went looking for paprika in the supermarket you might end up buying a different brand simply because that one caught your eye, when this one didn't. I was also surprised to find that once I opened the package I found that it said inside the box that this paprika is actually organic, which I hadn't noticed at all from looking and reading the packet. This is a real shame as I actually try to use mostly organic food products and if I saw that it was organic in the first glance at a supermarket then that would be something that would instantly make me choose this product over any other similar ones. The rest of the packaging was actually good and I was pleased to see that the actual spice came in an easily re-sealable bag which makes it very easy to use this product.
I first used this smoked paprika spice in some homemade hummus. I was making some hummus at home that just wasn't tasting quite right and so I added some of this smoked paprika which made it taste great! I am looking forward to using this is more of my daily cooking as it seems to be a great product that adds great taste and flavor to your cooking.
When I was a child my mother would use paprika in cooking and I always thought it was for colour and paprika didn't have much flavour. As an adult I haven't used paprika in cooking but after trying Mrs Rogers Smoked Paprika I will be. From the window in the cardboard packaging I could see that the smoked paprika had a lovely deep colour. When I opened the resealable plastic bag I could smell the lovely aroma. It reminded me of a good barbecue sauce. I knew then that this wasn't a bland seasoning and I was going to love it.
As I was a new paprika user I googled some recipes. I found it was very popular with chicken dishes. The recipe that I selected was a vegetable bake from the 4 Ingredients cookbook. It used just 3 ingredients: a mix of cooked vegetables, grated cheese and of course paprika. I chose to use this as a complete meal by having kumara and mixed vegetables. When the dish was under the grill it smelt divine. I couldn't wait to try it. I almost burnt my tongue in my rush. It tasted as good as it smelt. It is certainly a dish I will make often as it is so easy and great for using up leftovers. It could also be easily adapted to include pasta and meat.
I had a look at the other paprikas available (both smoked and regular) all the brands in glass jars were about twice the price of Mrs Roger's eco pack. The only ones that were a similar price were in boxes that didn't have a resealable bag. So because of the price, the packaging and the taste I will be buying Mrs Roger's Smoked Paprika again.
I haven't ever had Smoked Paprika in my spice rack but it's an ingredients that I know many chefs swear by or say is a must. So I was very interested in getting my hands on a box of this Mrs Rogers' Smoked Paprika. I did a little research and based on a few things I found, so I did a bit of a shop for ingredients for the week.
The first thing I did with this Smoked Paprika was a fish dish. I mixed the Paprika into some coconut yoghurt, and added some salt. I then mixed some Hoki fish pieces into the mixture, as well as some vegetables and slithers of capsicum as well. I baked these as a parcel in tin foil and served them on rice. It was the first time I had made fish in a while but the fish was nicely cooked and the Paprika's smokey flavour was a real star in this dish.
The next meal I had with this Paprika was a stir fry. I made a marinade with the Paprika, vinegar, soy sauce, and maple syrup. I mixed pieces of beef into it and left it to sit for a while. Then I fried this, added vegetables and noodles and then additional sauce. Again, the flavour of the beef was as sweet and smokey as I hoped. Even my kids ate it happily and they usually don't like pieces of beef like that and especially not if it's too flavourful.
Lastly last night we had breakfast for dinner as something fun. I added the Smoked Paprika to my scrambled egg mixture and served these with bacon and toast. It was so good and definitely something I will try again.
Packaging-wise I liked the presentation and I found the box easy to open. The bag inside was not as easy to open, but I feel confident that it is well sealed. It came with a recipe card that was for the Mexican Spice but that didn't matter too much as I had the internet and a sense of adventure when it came to experimenting.
"Smoked Paprika" is, to me, the heart of a smokey BBQ sauce. And since I am VERY particular about the BBQ sauces I will eat, I figured making my own was a great idea. Buying a huge bag of tomatoes while they were on special, making sure I had some quality brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, and of course a box of the paprika on hand, I set about making BBQ sauce.
I think my family grew to hate me... because I chose the day the landlords renovators started repainting the laundry, which is next to the kitchen. So... paint fumes - which let's be honest NO-ONE likes - and the smell of sweet, sticky BBQ sauce a'brewing was enough to drive everyone to the furthest reaches of the house to pursue any task they could think up that kept them on the other side of as many hastily-closed doors as they could manage.
Still, after a couple of hours of playing around, I finished up with a sauce that looked pretty offensive, but tasted awesome! The smokey paprika taste was clearly there, without being overpowering, and allowed the chilli and garlic to come through as well. I am now a bit of a fan, and really chuffed, because this was a sauce I have been wanting to try and make for ages.
Overall, though this isn't something you would use on its own very often, it would be great if blended with onion powder, and stirred through some sour cream or cream cheese to make a dip, and it would add some real depth to beef or chicken schnitzel if mixed with the flour or breadcrumbs. I think this has to be one of the best I have come across, and I am especially taken by the box - so dinky, and brilliant for the DIY gardener - with our plan of having a fully-potted herb and vege garden, these boxes are stunning as seedling starters. While the Mrs Roger's website suggests popping the bottom of the box open and releasing the seedling prior to planting, I'm thinking just shoving the whole thing in the ground would be ideal!
