Little Nicky product reviews

Little Nicky (Adam Sandler) is just your average horny, headbanging adolescent with a speech impediment from down south⦠way down south! Nicky is the son of the Prince of Darkness and he lives in Hades, ruled for 10,000 years by his dear old pop, Satan (Harvey Keitel). Nicky has two evil brothers (Rhys Iffans from 'Notting Hill' and Tiny Lister from 'Friday') who think pop's gone soft, and should vacate the throne⦠even if it means wasting him. So begins a chase that'll take them from the burning underworld to the only place that rivals it for sin, decadence and debauchery - New York City. Out of his depth and hellbent on saving Dad from his unearthly siblings, Nicky is about to encounter what life is like on the other side.

When it comes to Adam Sandler, it's best to stick with the early classics; Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, and Little Nicky. Little Nicky is one of the last of the great Adam Sandler films, because well, lets be honest, they are all just a bunch of the same style of comedy; Adam Sandler switching between childish, and abhorrently loud voices, slapstick comedy, highly sexualised jokes, and funny faces.

But if you haven't yet been flooded with a large number of his more recent attempts at comedy, this is a little gem. The supernatural spin that this film, is a breath of fresh air, and the way that it is overdone is still hilarious and not sad.

Much of the film looks to be a series of one-liners strung together, and written by a team of children aged 8-14. But it works. It has enough of a plot, variety in characters, sub-plots, and comedy, to create a film that is fun to watch. It appeals to my nostalgia, as well as my immaturity. If you want a stupidly fun film, that doesn't make you think, but makes you laugh, then this is the film to watch. Back when Adam Sandler was still one of the funny people.

I don't love Adam Sandler but I don't hate him either, I loved his role in "50 First Dates" and enjoyed "Mr Deeds" but I'm ambivalent about his other roles so I wasn't too fussed about "Little Nicky" but my husband was keen to see this and so we settled down to watch it. Little Nicky is about Nicky, the idiotic youngest son of Satan. When his brothers shut the gate into hell (which will cause his dad to die from lack of souls entering, and he literally begins to fall apart) and set to bring Hell to Earth, it is up to Nicky to head up to Earth and save the world and Hell, all whilst falling in love.

There is a lot of crude humor in this film, though one part I do love is the joke that a song played backwards has hidden meaning to it, oh, and his first great evil trick is to turn a can of Coke into Pepsi (though it might be the other way around...). The acting is as good as one should expect from a movie that aims to be stupid and so nothing stands out. Sandler's usual selection of friends have roles in this movie and I do have to admire him for always finding a way to include them.
