The Neverending Story product reviews

Bastian is a young boy who lives a dreary life being tormented by school bullies. On one such occasion he escapes into a book shop where the old proprieter reveals an ancient story-book to him, which he is warned can be dangerous. Shortly after, he "borrows" the book and begins to read it in the school attic where he is drawn into the mythical land of Fantasia, which desperately needs a hero to save it from destruction.

I can remember watching this when I was a child and enjoying it well enough, though it wasn't a much loved movie. My mum ended up buying this on DVD and it has been passed on to my children so that they can enjoy it.

A couple of months ago when my eldest was sick I allowed a movie marathon and since I didn't want the same favorites played over and over, I popped this movie on for the kids to watch. My son wanted to know why the bullies were being mean to Bastien and he really didn't like the fact that the boys were being mean, just to be mean, something he still doesn't like today. The kids have watched it a few times since and we watched it a couple of nights ago for movie night.

The special effects in this stand the test of time pretty well and even though there are a couple of moments where it is easy enough to tell, that can be said for movies filmed today, so that is not a big thing, really. The bit with the horse always had me trying not to bawl my eyes out when I was younger and is still a very sad part of the movies years later.

A good, fun, family film.

I remember when I first watched this movie, it was on the big screen and at the end of the movie I wanted my very own luck dragon. Well for family movie night we watched this again (only for about the tenth or so time for me) with the kids.

What stood out for me this time is how great the special effects are considering how old the movie is and that it deals with fantasies. You do feel sorry for Bastian as he tried to out run the bullies and then as he starts reading you wonder what will save Fantasia. I loved the names for the various areas of Fantasia, I can remember thinking don't fall to the swamp of sadness and then feeling really sorry for the horse as it becomes obvious that he was sinking.

I really liked that there is a great story and it is one that is relevant today as it was last year and it will be relevant for years to come. It is great to see how he slowly realises that the "human child" that is needed to save Fantasia is himself and how he escapes from reality and that is what a good book should do, encourage you to use your imagination and discover new and wonderful things.

I am going to be buying this on DVD as it is one I really want to be able to watch over and over.
