If you want a movie that builds up at a decent base and provides the scares then Event Horizon is a film for you.

At first glance, Event Horizon would appear to be a science fiction film through and through, set in the future and in space, it is about a rescue mission to another ship. Yet, before long, it's quickly obvious that Event Horizon is, in fact, a horror film set in space, and a surprisingly effective one at that. Man has attempted faster-than-light travel and the vessel built for this disappeared, seven years later it reappears in orbit over Neptune and a rescue ship, the Lewis & Clark, is dispatched to determine if there are survivors and what happened. Soon enough though, the rescue team start to see some pretty freaky things and it is clear something came back with the ship.

Event Horizon is not a ground breaking movie in any way but you spend so much time on the edge of your seat, suitably freaked out the entire time. One thing that really helps is the setting, the Event Horizon is freaky as heck, that alone creates a spooky atmosphere. As the film progresses, there is an increase in make-up effects gruesomeness which really adds to the slow build up, I really like that everything isn't just thrown at you. Sam Neill is probably the most memorable as the slowly disintegrating Weir, tumbling to madness before our eyes, Laurence Fishbure is effective as the hard-nosed captain, and everyone else gets the job done.

Event Horizon isn't the most original horror film made, but it is one of the more disturbing movies that I've seen.
