Welcome to Deep Space 9....
Deep Space 9 began whilst The Next Generation was airing, so we begin with a very awkward encounter between Captain Picard (not too long after he was assimilated and liberated from the Borg) and Captain Benjamin Sisko (who's wife died at Worf359). The first episode packs a lot into one episode as Sisko and his crew race to discover the wormhole rumoured to be near the station and Sisko gets named the Emissary which is a very important position for those on Bajor.
The season though takes it's time to build up and feels rather slow after the full on first episode, but that isn't too bad as we are coming to a space station that was run by the Cardassians during their occupation of Bajor, the crew needs to modify the technology to be updated and work well, and then there is all the tension and suspicion ruling the station, especially as the Bajorans still don't yet trust the federation. Despite being slow though it is a very good building block for the rest of the series to follow and without it we may have ended up feeling rather lost.
Deep Space 9 is the first Star Trek to be set on a stationary station, but it's done well and has a good setting.
