Doctor Who: An Adventure in Space & Time product reviews

1This special one-off drama travels back in time to 1963 to see how the beloved "Doctor Who" was first brought to the screen. Actor William Hartnell felt trapped by a succession of hard-man roles. Wannabe producer Verity Lambert was frustrated by the TV industry's glass ceiling. Both of them were to find unlikely hope and unexpected challenges in the form of a Saturday tea-time drama, time travel and monsters! Allied with a team of brilliant people, they went on to create the longest running science fiction series ever, now celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Special Features:
    •  William Hartnell: The Original
    •  Behind the Scenes narrated by Carole Ann Ford (the actress who played the First Doctor's companion)
    •  Deleted Scenes
    •  Regenerations
    •  Recreated Scenes from the first Doctor Who story, 'An Unearthly Child,' using original Marconi cameras

I'm a big Doctor Who fan but with all the episodes I was trying to record during the 50th anniversary I got so muddled up and accidentally deleted An Adventure in Time and Space, so when this came up for requesting and I managed to get it I was most excited.

This movie is about how the TV show got started back in 1963. Hartnell was out of work and sick of doing the same characters. Verity wanted to get a job in the TV industry and was given the task of getting Dr Who off the ground and on to the small screen. Along the way there were issues with the fact that she was a female in charge, limited budget, trying to get the inside of the TARDIS built and then airing the show, it's first episode coming out when JFK was assassinated.

It's fun to see just how one of my favourite shows of all time got started (having watched every episode available in repeat after repeat) and interesting little titbits like the TARDIS being based upon a couple of thread spools on top of each other. I had the same sense of joy Verity must of had when on the bus after the second screening of Dr Who on TV and the kids on the bus crying 'exterminate' and playing along as Daleks. It almost had me bawling my eyes out when Hartnell was shooting his final scene and how much he was going to miss it, and a nice touch of sentimentality having the 11th Doctor there briefly.

This is really well done and such a fun way to see how this TV series got started and just how they lead into what has become a TV favourite for generations.
