I was given the D-Link AC750 router to review. As someone with a fair bit of IT knowledge (read geekery) behind me I jumped at the chance to try this out. With the latest wireless protocol AC standard I was very much looking forward to trying this out for streaming movies through our home network. Setup through the D-Link wizard would be very simple for Telecom and Vodafone users, however as my ISP is not one of those listed in the wizard I had to enter my own ISP's details. This is certainly something to watch out for if you're not with one of the big ISP's.

Before unplugging your previous modem make sure you go to your ISP's website and get the router setup details, you will need The WAN protocol (PPPoA etc), Encapsulation setting and the VPI and VCI settings. After entering these details, the rest of the setup was extremely easy. Setting up WiFi details and security was part of the wizard setup which is a good idea as it makes you choose a non-factory WiFi password.

First test after setting up was trying to stream a 1080p video file from my desktop hardrive through to my Playstation 3 over WiFi, on my previous router which only supported the 802.11n speed this was not usually possible. The stream worked perfectly with no stuttering so this was certainly a pass mark. Second test was to check gaming performance through the PS3 over WiFi this too had no issues with no noticeable latency issues.

Physically the device does look good, natural vertical orientation is also a good thing to help it keep cool and takes up less space. The biggest issue I had with the router was the fact it only has one Ethernet port, this does come into issues if you have more than one device that doesn't have WiFi, though the box did include a USB WiFi dongle which does semi negate this issue.

The mydlink Cloud service is absolutely great. setup is easy and gives you access to any data you choose to put into the cloud anywhere you go. As a photographer this is a great service as I can pull up any photo I have on my home computer and show it to someone either on their computer or on my phone. For free this is certainly a great service and will get a lot of use that's for sure.

The only problem I had with this router was after a few days use it would lose internet connection and would require to be either reconnected or rebooted through the web browser. Initially I thought this may have been due to our network connection however after plugging my old unit in and running it for the same length of time it would not cut out but would once plugging the D-Link back in. After numerous forum and help searches through D-Links website I could not find any answers that fixed the issues, most likely as this unit is very new on the market. I gave the unit to my neighbour to try as they are on Telecom and whilst setup was a lot easier it created the same issue of loosing connection after a day or two. Hopefully this issue may be fixed in it's next firmware update. Whether or not I just have a dud unit, I am unsure. I will update this post if the next firmware update fixes this issue.

Other then the connection issue this is a very good router and the speed gain from the 802.11ac is a big positive. The unit itself does price itself in the top tier range of routers and the functionality does make this very good value. I do actually recommend this router if you are a heavy network user or have multiple devices using the WiFi network.
