Product reviews...
I first discovered the Continental Cook-in-Bag range a few months ago at the supermarket, there were so many different flavour varieties that it was a hard decision deciding which one to buy, however in the end I settled for the Roasted Garlic and Herb as I thought this would be a perfect flavour addition for the roast chicken I had planned for dinner. As much as I love roast chicken I always find that the ones I cook at home seem to be really lacking flavour wise, especially compared to the deliciously moist and flavoursome hot rotisserie chickens you can get in the supermarket, though these are a lot more costly than buying a frozen chicken I tend to buy them for the flavour factor, so I lived in hope that this Cook-in-bag may help solve my problems.
This recipe mix is super easy to use and comes with really clear instructions. You take the cooking bag and place your chicken inside it (you could use any cut of chicken I'm sure but in this case I used a whole chicken) and then you add the recipe base flavour sachet, seal up the bag and then toss the bag and shake it all about until your chicken is evenly coated. Pop the oven bag into a roasting dish and then place it straight into the oven to cook.
The smell as the chicken cooks is delectable with the lovely aroma of garlic and herbs as well as hat of juicy roast chicken. The idea of cooking the chicken in the bag is pure genius (and something I have never thought to do myself). Cooking in the bag means that the chicken is cooking and sitting in it's own juices which seemed to really help in keeping the chicken moist and flavoursome. The flavour from the recipe base was lovely and went so well with the roast chicken with a generous flavour of both garlic and herbs which could still be tasted under the chicken gravy which my chicken was served with. It reminded me a lot of the taste of a store brought rotisserie chicken yum yum yum.
This is something I would recommend if you like roast chicken, and something that I'll be buying again, I can't wait to try out more of the flavours and try to cook with different cuts of chicken. The other great thing about this product is that it makes cleaning up easy the mess is in the bag, instead of stuck to your roasting dish.
I am a little bit embarrassed but I really suck at doing a good roast chicken. I tend to buy hot chickens from the supermarket, they are packed full of flavour and are always moist and tender. The complete polar opposite from my own dry tasteless chicken that I always seem to make. My mum swears by cooking in the bag and always told me to try this method so when at the supermarket I bought one of these continental recipe bases.
Cooking in the bag locks in a lot of the chicken's own juices so the chicken stays really moist and tender and these bags do just that. The bag is big enough to cook a whole roast chicken, but I have also used it for cooking a lot of chicken drumsticks too. All you do is put the chicken in the bag toss in the recipe base, seal the bag and shake and pop it in the oven to cook.
The result is moist, tender chicken with lots of flavour. Over the years I ahve tried all sorts of marinading, basting, seasoning etc but I have never got as much flavour into the chicken as I have with these recipe base cook in bags. The best thing is that my oven roasting dish stays clean and there is no splatter inside my oven and if I can minimise dishes and cleaning I am a happy lady!
