My 4 year old son has one of those temperaments where, if given a choice, he'd prefer to play on the computer with a painting program rather than do stuff in books. He's very visually-cued.
So when he took an interest in these books I was, to be quite blunt, totally stunned! He doesn't 'do' books... as we found out after spending a small lump of savings on the Reading Master set. And despite his love of pointing out numbers as we travel around town, he really isn't in to maths.
After about 20 minutes of outright bribery to get him to sit still and try these books, he was quite hooked. He enjoyed the attention and praise when he did well, and the positive reinforcement went a long way towards getting him to have another go the next day as well.
Overall, after only a couple of days, I have noticed an improvement already. I can hold up some fingers on each hand, and he will tell me their sum within seconds... a drastic improvement over his past attempts. As he progresses further through the books, his skills are growing daily. Excellent to see. By the time he starts school, I anticipate a surprise for his teachers. :)
