Chicken nuggets have to be Miss 2's favourite meal at our house, when ever she is lucky enough to decide what we are having for dinner the answer is chicken nuggets more often then not. When I saw the Tegel zoo animals chicken nuggets in the frozen section of the supermarket I brought them thinking they looked like a cute way of serving chicken nuggets to my animal crazy toddler. She was very excited to hear she was having 'zoo animals' for dinner. When I dished up her plate and put it in front of her immediately she began to pick up the nuggets and tried to guess what the animals were and would make the sound of that animal, I must say they weren't the easiest of shapes to distinguish but with a little creativity and guessing she had fun in eating her animals.
Taste wise they weren't to bad, though the chicken content on the back wasn't very high, and so these weren't exactly nutritional, in saying that they are fine as a treat or quick meal every so often, personally though I would buy the Inghams brand chicken nuggets over these, as I prefer the taste and these don't have considerable amount more chicken in them. These are great served with a side of sauce we normally use tomato or bbq. Recently we served these up at my daughters birthday 'Peppa Pig' themed party as Dinosaur nuggets which we could easily do due to the shapes which made them lots of fun for the kids and a big hit.
Well it is not a hard task to get children to eat chicken nuggets anyway but these little zoo animal shaped nuggets are always a hit with my children and make dinner a whole lot more fun! When my daughter was younger she would identify what animal she had in her hand and make it make noises and walk around before eating it now she is 11 she doesn't do that anymore but she still loves these nuggets.
As I said in a previous review of Tegel Real Deal Chicken Loopys I find it alarming how little the percentage of chicken nuggets is actually chicken. I never really thought of it before watching a program on what is really in your chicken nuggets which sort of ruined the whole nugget experience for me! These ones do have a higher precentage of chicken than the Loopys though and the chicken in these is actually a white colour which is a bonus.
The nuggets are in a nice tempura style batter which comes up nice and crispy just cooked in the oven, so there is no need to fry them to get a nice crispy nugget. So I have actually tried them and the 'chicken' is nice and tender inside and has that juiciness that chicken is supposed to have. What I like about them is they only take a few short minutes to cook in the oven so you can make a meal for your kids really quickly and as the chicken is pre-cooked you are only really needing to cook them long enough to crisp the batter.
When you have extra kids coming round a meal of these and some oven fries is really easy to cook and serve with either barbeque sauce or tomato sauce and then you know the children will have full tummies as there is never much waste with this meal.
Chicken nuggets are a stable food in our house. My daughter's favourite meal is a handful of chicken nuggets with some chips and vegetables. Though, if we are fair, the main vegetables she eats is chips and tomato sauce. We don't really need to encourage eating of the nuggets as they are her best bit of any dinner. However, she loves animals so when I saw these I got them.
My daughter is very particular when it comes to animals. She loves them all, but with anything that says it is animals they must look the way they are meant to. This is where the Tegal Zoo animals failed. I could see that they were animal shapes. But I couldn't see what they were. It caused a few arguments as to whether it was a bear or a camel.
In the end my daughter actually refused to eat them because the shapes disappointed her a bit much. Taste-wise they were delicious. They got crunchy without drying out. They were easy to cook up. I served them with sweet chili sauce, which is my husband's favourite way to enjoy them. My daughter had them with tomato sauce, and I enjoyed mine without sauce.
Overall though, because of the shapes, we haven't been able to buy these more than twice. We now just get plain shapes. I might try these ones again when she is a bit older and less hung up on these things.
