I love how books span generations. This treasured book that I loved as a child is now a very special book in my sons book collection. Although the book is unchanged it still possesses all the magic that it did for me as a child.

My son is only 9 months old so thank goodness this is a board book because a lot of the time it's covered in slobber, it definitely stands up to infant dribble. Even if he doesn't understand the story yet there's so much that he can enjoy. There are so many bright and beautiful colours in the book that he's always interested in, the pages are at lots of different levels and sizes and there's lots of small holes to try and poke your finger through to his delight.

So even if he doesn't quite understand the complexities of the book yet I know that it's going to be a story he'll treasure right throughout his childhood just as I have and there will be even more joy once he fully understands the very special story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar. If you want a book that will last through the ages and multiple children I would definitely choose the board book though so it's a little more hard wearing.

This has got to be one of the best children's books ever written, and my absolute favourite from when I was a child, and is now one of my daughters favourite. Though The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been around for many years it still remains a firm favourite amongst children and adults alike and I'm pretty sure it will remain so for many more generations to come. This was one of the first books that I ever purchased for my daughter and it has been read over and over and over again, even though there are some torn pages it doesn't matter we still love to read it, although perhaps a new copy could be worth getting!

As an Early Childhood teacher this has to be one of the most valuable books for teaching so many different educational concepts throughout, from counting, days of the week, names of fruits and foods, colours and also the life cycle of a caterpillar, making this such a fantastic book to refer to when the children are interested in watching swan plants with caterpillars on and seeing the way the changes take place. The story follows through the life of how a little egg lays on a leaf, and then turns into a caterpillar and then into a beautiful butterfly. The illustrations are very clear and bright and make it very easy to follow what is going on, the words are simple enough for the children to understand and follow, with many 3 and 4 year olds being able to retell the story for themselves.

The best part about this book is how the caterpillar munches its way through the fruits starting off with 1 apple, followed by 2 pears, 3 plums, 4 strawberries, and 5 oranges, this is presented in such a neat way with a little hole punched hole in the fruits with the caterpillars head poking out to make it look like he is eating the fruits, kids love this part.

Definitely a must have book for your young child, if they don't already have it, I recommend it for an upcoming Christmas or Birthday gift.

We were given a beloved copy of this book in a Board Book Format by one of my University Lecturer's when my daughter was a newborn baby. It had been passed down in her family through different children and my daughter was the next lucky one to have it. So money value wise you can not put a price on that...!

One can not go past this classic children's book for in any child's library, every home should have a copy of it floating around I say. I remember being read it as a child in primary school and it just sticks with you for a life time. We are fortunate now to have so much of this story in so many different formats now.

I love that my daughter learns different things from this story, she learns in a quick format the life cycle of a butterfly. She can learn to count, the days of the week, different foods, and different colours too she has picked up from this book. For such a small short story it holds so much more to it. She loves that she can also interact with this book a bit by poking her fingers through the holes - the board book is a bit easier and sturdy for this without running the risk of ripping the page...!

One thing I love is when we can go out into the real world and see the Monarch Butterflies and Caterpillars on our Swan Plants she is able to see the eggs, baby caterpillars and watch them grow, we haven't yet seen the rest of the process together but we are still able to relate back to this book. Hey do you remember in the light of the moon how a tiny little egg sat on the leaf? Look here is one... oh look there is a tiny caterpillar it has popped out of its egg...!

I highly recommend this book! It is one book that you do not get tired of reading over and over again. Regardless of how old you are.

This is one of the best children's books ever! It is timeless and generations after generations will love to read it, assuming of course that you can keep it in good condition with all that reading. I, for one, am on my second book because my daughter loved it so much and accidentally ripped a page out or two.

It comes in both soft cover and hard board book formats, I opted for the latter for my second book, and you can also get small and larger versions. So, no matter the size of your library, you should be able to fit this book in it.

Not only is it a great story for kids, it's also very educational, following the life of a caterpillar turning into a beautiful butterfly and how that process happens, from egg hatching to cocoon making. The images throughout the book have been beautifully done and it looks like a lot of thought and effort has gone into them.

I especially like how in the middle of the book there are pages which are different sizes, my daughter really loves being able to count the fruit as she turns those pages. The small holes in the food that the caterpillar has eaten is a nice effect.

If you have a child and don't own this book then I suggest you go to your nearest book shop (or order online) and pick one up because your child will love it.

I think The Very Hungry Caterpillar will always remain a classic and remain a favourite with most children. The book I have is a larger board book that has an audio CD with it which is a bonus because the soundtrack adds that something extra special. The children at my work love it when this book is bought out for mat times, they know just about all of the words and will read along with the teacher.

We did a study on monarch caterpillars/butterflies and this book was read everyday for a couple of weeks and the children help to make up a magnetic story based on the book, they drew their own small caterpillar, their own apple, 2 pears, lollipops, butterflies etc...and the children would use the magnetic story of the very hungry caterpillar all by themselves during their free play time.

One of the 3 year old boys drew a cocoon for caterpillar but instead of calling it a cocoon he called it the caterpillars changing room because in his thinking that is were the caterpillar changed into the beautiful butterfly and he couldn't remember the word cocoon so after that the caterpillars cocoon has been renamed the changing room....which is super cute!

Being a board book this book is specifically designed for younger children to read and this book being bigger is perfect for a few children to sit down with it where they can all see the pages. The added bonus of counting within the book makes it an all-rounder good book...and what child doesn't like eating all that 'junk' food and it is a good conversational piece to talk about which foods the children like and which foods they food, like not liking the pickle, or being allergic to the cheese, but like eating the lollipops and chocolate cake etc.

I like the graphics within the book I think the hand drawn looking pictures are almost child-like and how they are painted roughly with different colours is how young children colour in their pictures. Such a great way to appeal to both children and adults alike. With the repetition of the words within the book it makes it easy for children to read along as the book is being read aloud or when the CD is being used.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar comes in many book forms, a small board book, a large board book, a small soft cover and a large soft cover so whatever type of book that fits for family they is one for you. A book in my opinion that will always be around,it will always be reprinted and is definitely a book that should be treasured. I actually have several copies of the this book and even have a beaten up and very well used softcover book that I had as a young child...it literally must be one of the first copies out 30 years ago ( just checked it was printed in 1974) so it is actually older than me, so it would have been bought by my parents second hand at the time! what a true treasure and it will continue to be treasured by me!

If you haven't got a copy of this book you must go out and buy a copy as soon as you can, it is a decision that you will not regret, it will be around for a very long time...and if you have children then this is definitely a book that needs to be in my library...you children will love it and you will enjoy reading it to them.

As far as classic children's books go I think this book is one of the best and will always remain on children's bookshelves throughout the world. I remember the story from when I was little and I always enjoyed the tale of the greedy caterpillar who eventually turns in to a beautiful butterfly.

I bought this book when my daughter was little and it was a book we had to read over and over again and now with my son we have the same thing. It is such a great book in that it has so much educational content you have the maths with the counting, and the general knowledge of different fruit and the scientific content of the life cycle of the butterfly.

Being a teacher I have use the book a few times to lead into discussions about butterflies and at one centre I worked at we grew swan plants and watched the butterfly life cycle in action. I am quite keen to grow some at home as it is amazing watching caterpillars turn into beautiful butterflies.

This is a definite great baby shower gift to any new parents as it will be a book that they and their children will treasure.

This has to be one of the favs in the house, I remember reading it when I was little and now my kids have this small board book. I love how it has the whole story in it. The book teaches them there are 7 days of the week as your reading it goes from Sunday to Sunday again which I find awesome, there is a lot of counting which is also great for little ones.

I will read this with my kids and they will help me finish the sentences like "but he was STILL hungry", The pictures are great they are almost like a sketch artist but leaves the pictures feeling real. We love how he eats though his fruit firs then moves onto all that not so healthy stuff, my daughter always tells me he got fat cause of the bad food but thats why he had to eat the leaf to get the bad food out of him first.

Another thing I love about this book is teaching the children the life cycle of a caterpillar without them evening knowing they are learning about it, starting as an egg, then getting bigger by eating until one day he is so fat and big he needs to make a cocoon after a while he turns into a butterfly. The book is mini so your kids can carry it around with them and the best part if your going on a small trip this would fit nicely in your bag to take to the doctors, supermarket etc
