When I got this DVD home and showed it to my eldest daughter she squealed with delight. She rushed to Daddy and asked if we could watch Dr Who. She just adores Tom Baker's Doctor. So it was an easy yes as we sat down to dinner and watched this. What we love about these older episodes of the Dr is that they are from our own childhoods. Tom Baker was the Dr Who I remembered most from being younger and watching this with my mum. So it's neat to sit and watch together.
This storyline reminded me of some of the space documentaries that my daughter enjoys. The ones where we explore what might happen if the sun dies and the building of great big ark-like space ships. So it had a lot going for it. The "monsters" were a bit scary for her, but they had nothing on the CGI new "monsters" that we don't let her watch. Once we pointed out the bubble-wrap and the paint, she was much more at ease. We told her legends of the BBC costume department, and how they could turn anything into an alien device or a space costume. They were very clever that way.
Another big tick for this DVD was that Sarah Jane Smith is one of the characters in the story. My daughter adores the Sarah Jane Adventures which follow the same character and K-9 later in life. At one point in the story, things looked grim and my daughter was so cheery. "Oh mum, nothing bad will happen to Sarah Jane! She has her adventures to get to yet". Wise girl, very wise. All in all, another hit and one which is already being re-watched.
