About a week ago I got hold of the Nike Plus Training disc for the Xbox 360 Kinect. We have had a Kinect for a while, but we haven't made a lot of use of it. With thoughts of getting fitter dancing in my head, I decided to give it a go. My first experience with the game was very frustrating. I'm not very technical though, and it was the Kinect and its tracking of my body that caused the issues rather than the game play itself. Once we got the tracking sorted I was good to go.

So I love this product! As a larger person when using other weight or fitness management systems, once I put my vital statistics into the tool, it will either lock or not let me go any further without consulting a doctor. And usually there is no way to unlock it even if I had consulted a doctor. With the Nike Plus game, it has the standard doctor disclaimer but it treats you like an adult too, making a healthy choice for yourself. I also liked that my daughter was able to have a go and it didn't freak out about the 115cm, 20 kg person it was training.

The training test allowed the program to see me in action and get a feel for my strengths and weaknesses. It also gave me a score, which was very embarassing. But then its also a goal to do better at the end of your 4 week program. I have done two of the training sessions so far. You get to select the days you want to train and the personal trainer recognises that you have attend on the days you are meant to.

There's plenty of pep talk and guidance on your form. I did find that my loose clothes confused the sensor sometimes, so it thought I hadn't completed the push up movements. I also had some issues with the program randomly deciding to restart an exercise. I possibly selected to re-do it somehow, but I couldn't see how it happened. Then again if you are really struggling to hold a form or do an exercise exactly you can get the sensor to stop tracking you.

Another cool thing is that when you finish your workout, if you did a good job the program will give you rewards like messages from famous athletes. I've got a couple of perfect form and personal best achievements so far and I'm actually really loving doing the workouts. I'm excited to see how I'll go over the next three weeks and what my fitness will look like at the end.

This is a product for the person who needs the guidance of a personal trainer but either can't afford it, can't find the time to go to the gym or wouldn't want to be around the beautiful people at a gym. Its not a game that you play for more than your alloted training time, but I think its highly replayable. I wouldn't say it causes sleepless nights, but only because you aren't going to sit and play for hours on end like those epic adventure games.
