Hairy Maclary is a favourite of mine right back from when I was a child, I remember gathering quite a collection as whenever I was allowed a new book I seemed to almost always choose a Hairy Maclary one, sadly I don't know what happened to them, if only I did as Miss 2 is Hairy Maclary crazy and would have loved them as I did.
A couple of months ago Miss 2's Aunty and Uncle went over to Scotland for a month and upon there return as a present for Miss 2 they brought her back the Hairy Maclary Book and raggedy, rascally Hairy Maclary toy gift pack, she was so excited when she opened it and new straight away that it was Hairy Maclary, and raced off around the house looking for the rest of her Lynley Dodd Hairy Maclary books. Straight away she sat down and wanted the story read to her, and loved to make the toy dog walk around as we read the book, every now and then making it say "woof woof".
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy is such a great classic Kiwi Kids book, that i'm pretty sure most Kiwi Kids have heard of, if not owned. The way in which the book rhymes and repeats itself makes it a lot of fun to read, and for kids to quickly learn the words to and read along to, with lots of fun names for each of the dogs throughout the story. I really love the way that the rest of the Hairy Maclary series of books follows on from this story with all of the same characters. Working in a childcare centre for many years this is definitely a favourite story amongst all of the children whom I have looked after.
The pictures are well illustrated, bright and beautiful, and really represent the names of each of the dogs. The Hairy Maclary soft toy is a definite favourite in the household now with Miss 2 taking it everywhere she goes, even to bed. I would recommend this as a super cute gift for a new born baby or a baby shower it is sure to become a favourite.
I love all of Lynley Dodd's books (Both the text and the illustrations) and have read Hairy Maclary so many times as a New Entrant teacher, a parent and now as a homebased educarer that I know it off by heart. All the kids just love him, especially my girls as their grandparents have a dog that looks very similar to him. Hairy Maclary is a mischievous dog and along with his friends I have followed them on many adventures. This is the original story and is a great way of meeting all the dogs.
The soft toy version of Hairy Maclary is so cute I had to buy it. It makes a perfect gift for a baby shower or wee child. Because it is a classic New Zealand book (and character it would be especially great for someone overseas. Sadly the soft toy did not stand up the abuse my children gave him. He got very grubby and after a trip in the washing machine his fur became matted.
I love, love, love this gift set you don't get much better than a Hairy Maclary book and even better it comes with a cute soft toy of Hairy himself all beautifully presented in a cool box. My son received this for his birthday and it was a real hit straight away.
Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy is a great book which will be a classic for generations, my daughter loved the books when she was younger so I have wanted to get the books for Cai too as it is such a great story. I love the rhyming and repetition in the book and all the characters names like Bitzer Maloney all skinny and boney and Bottomley Potts all covered in spots, and of course Scarface Claw the toughest cat in town.
The illustrations are absolutely beautiful and show the animals just as you would imagine them to be yet still being simple drawings. The soft toy dog looks just like the picture in the book and is real good quality so it will last as a special toy for years to come.
