Product reviews...
I had never really eaten chutney before but recently at my Nana's I had some on crackers and thought it was delicious. Anyway Miss 3 loves having things such as relish and chutney on her crackers with cheese, and used to love a tomato based relish however she hasn't been allowed tomatoes due to allergies for some time now and so thanks to daycare I have found a sweetcorn relish that she can have which she absolutely loves. Scrolling the supermarket shelves for the sweetcorn relish a few weeks back I happened to spot this peach and mango chutney on the shelves and so ended up deciding to buy this instead. Having tried the Barkers Spiced Apricot and Mango Sauce and seeing how much the whole family loved it I thought that this similar seeming product would also be a hit.
I have to admit even though I really liked the sound of the flavour combination I was a bit stumped as to how this would go on crackers with cheese etc, however I was totally wrong and it worked deliciously the sweetness of the fruits was really well complemented by the savoury spices in the chutney and was absolutely delicious on crackers, Miss 3 loved it and asked for more and my partner well he kept stealing them off my plate even though he apparently doesn't like crackers. I really can't believe how many different uses I have found for this product from savoury scrolls, toasted sandwiches, as a dip mixed with cream cheese and also as a great accompaniment to crumbed chicken. Goes to show when you think about something and be creative there are so many ways to use such a thing.
This chutney is quite chunky with good chunks of peaches and mango throughout, I love the fruitiness of it, the spices used are spot on and they go hand in hand with the sweetness of the fruit. Another quality product from Barkers of Geraldine that will be going into my trolley again.
I have never tried any of the barkers chutneys before my partner is so stuck with his horrible piccalilli stuff that he loves and I think is absolutely disgusting. I sometimes get myself a sweet fruit chutney as I love it with cheese but wanted to try this as it is a little different from the normal chutneys you see. I love sweet fruit served in a savory way and thought peach and mango would be divine.
I wasn't wrong a bit of cheese on a cracker with a generous dollop of the chutney was delicious, I soon lost the other one I had made as my partner wanted to try it to, and loved it so much he made himself even more. Maybe we will be able to move past the piccalilli. I thought that the chutney would also be great on chicken schnitzel to add an amazing savory sweet flavor.
The chutney isn't spicy which is good as it means my kids can eat it too. I thought it would be too sweet for my partners tastes but it definitely has a savory kick from the spices and onion so it balances out the sweetness. I decided to use it to make a mango chicken curry which was absolutely divine. It was a great base to hide grated apple and carrot to give my 18 month old more fruit and vegetables than he would usually eat.
I made a sauce using the chutney, cream, chicken stock powder, and curry powder and hide the grated fruit and vegetables in it and then just cooked some chicken to go with the sauce. My son has been a huge fussy eater for the last couple of months which is hard because he used to eat anything. He loved this sauce and although he didn't eat a lot of the chicken he was getting spoons full of sauce and eating it on it's own. I kind of had my fingers crossed he wouldn't like it anyway as it meant more for my dinner.
Thought this was okay....was referred by a friend to try some Peach and Mango Chutney by Barkers. I am a fan of savoury chutneys so I wasn't too sure of a sweet chutney especially made from peaches!! I was pleasantly surprised however to discover a kick of heat in there, I was surprised it wasn't sweet at all, and totally different to what I expected....I think maybe to the point where I couldn't actually make up my mind if I liked it or not but after eating nearly 1/3 of the jar I decided it was okay!!
I like the fact that Peach and Mango Chutney by Barkers is locally made in New Zealand and is gluten free with no artificial colours or sweeteners, and the jar was literally filled to the brim, it was easy to scoop up and spread on crackers for a quick snack like I did to taste the product. Thought maybe I would try the Peach and Mango Chutney by Barkers on a toasted sandwich with melted cheese and ham, thought trying it with a savoury twist and cooking it rather having than having it cold may sway my average feeling of it into a yay this is yummo!
The price I thought was really good as peaches and especially mangos aren't cheap when they are purchased as a fresh fruit, and it was an added bonus that all Barkers products are in special at the supermarket this week, so it was a great time to buy and try a few different flavours. Also I have a work shout tomorrow so I will be taking a taste of Peach and Mango Chutney by Barkers with some crackers as a quick and no fuss but yummy and tasty snack.
I look forward to trying the other flavours of the Barkers range but for now the Peach and Mango Chutney isn't my cup of tea and probably won't be picking that flavour again. But don't let my opinion slow you down it is worth a try I just prefer a savoury taste without a hint of heat. Heat and sweet just aren't for me.
Yum this chutney is my ultimate favourite! Its good value money wise and a family favourite we've had for years.
As far as chutneys go, im normally not that interested in them but i find the sweetness of this mixed with a little bit of spice to be just perfect! Normally i match this with Camembert or cream cheese on crackers as a snack or savoury treat. I havent yet tried it with salads or with cooked chicken etc but imagine that it would be nice.
I remember liking this as a young child but i recently found that 3year olds definitely dont like it, which suits me fine, more for the adults :) I also love the fact that there's nothing artificial and its made in NZ!
Sometimes this chutney can be harder to find than the other brands out there but believe me (Ive tried them all) and ive found this one to be by far the best!
