Rena's Promise: A Story of Sisters in Auschwitz product reviews

Sent to Auschwitz on the first Jewish transport, Rena Kornreich survived the Nazi death camps for over three years. While there she was reunited with her sister Danka. Each day became a struggle to fulfill the promise Rena made to her mother when the family was forced to split apart - a promise to take care of her sister.

One of the few Holocaust memoirs about the lives of women in the camps, "Rena's Promise" is a compelling story of the fleeting human connections that fostered determination and made survival a possibility. From the bonds between mothers, daughters, and sisters, to the links between prisoners, and even prisoners and guards, "Rena's Promise" reminds us of the humanity and hope that survives inordinate inhumanity.

This book was a fantastic insight into the personal plight of women in the camps during World War Two. The love, passion and resilience of Rena, her family and her friends is outstanding. Its something I can never imagine of being able to bear, let alone survive how she did. The book is such an eye opener and it is fantastic to read from a women's point of view.

The book is a roller-coaster of emotions, and so raw and chilling that it is a true story, nothing fictional about it. From the little amount of food, to the cold hard beds, the rats, the lice, the wet boots and the scratchy uniforms.Renas Promise makes you feel like you are there living and breathing Auschwitz.

The writing isn't the most amazing I have read, although coming back to it being true, it makes it worthwhile. At times the book drags on, but the overall experience of finishing and reading it is so worth it, it feels like a real accomplishment.
