Product reviews...
Recently my daughter received this book from school as an award for her reading acheivements. Theres a hole in my bucket is one of my favorite lyrics from when I was younger, and to see it penned and sang by The Topp Twins absolutely made my day.
The lyrics are still the same, but The Topp Twins, add a wonderful kiwi twist to this age old folk song. Yes it can seem repetitive, as it did when I was younger, but with the Topp Twins, comedic twist, you just don't get bored. You can not help but smile, and laugh as you listen/read/sing along to the enclosed CD.
Miss 6 absolutely adores this book and CD, and is more than happy to play/read it over and over again, whether just listening to the CD or reading the book or doing both together. She even takes the book and CD in the car with her.
The pictures are quirky and fun too, which just makes it a really great book! And it is The Topp Twins first childrens book too Jools sings the part of poor Henry, and Lynda is dear Liza. Miss 6 loves trying to match her voice to both as she sings along. The country twist is just perfect!
I highly recommend this book, both to encourage reading and and to show it can be enjoyable. I also recommend it as a fantastic gift idea. Approx $25 for a book and CD set...you just can not go wrong! This one gets the two thumbs up from all of us.
There's a hole in my bucket is one of my favourite books at the moment!! It is awesome!! I love that it comes with a CD as I am an Early Childhood Teacher and on days that I am constantly using my voice I enjoy taking full advantage of the CD and playing that to the children at story time. Also the children like asking for the CD to be put on so they can hold the book themselves when they are looking for a quiet activity to do. Sometimes the children like playing teacher and holding their own mat time.
The pictures in the the book are so cute, and the children are fascinated with the characters of the goat and duck, and with the catchy tune to sing along with I will be using this at many more mat times as the children sit there captivated, and have a laugh at the silly things they do within the book to try and fix the hole in the bucket.
I like the fact that the Topp Twins sing the song as they are very Kiwi and the added bonus of Jenny Coopers drawing which bring the characters to life just makes this book a real treasure. If you haven't got this book in your library go and purchase it now you wont have any regrets!!
I'm sure everyone my age is very familiar with this song and many of us know it off by heart as a result of singing it at school. Just this morning when my daughter spotted a hole in Daddy's sock he sang "There's a hole in my sock dear Liza." How appropriate that at the library with the children this morning they found the book and bought it home.
The children were surprised when I picked up the book and sang it to them. Books where we can sing along have always been firm favourites in our household. It didn't take long before my girls (four and two) were singing along with me.
I love the drawings. The duck (Liza) and the goat (Henry) are very humorous and the plain white background means it is uncluttered. They fact that the book is illustrated by Jenny Cooper, a prolific New Zealand children's illustrator makes them familiar to many kids.
It is a bonus that the book also contains a CD of our famous Topp Twins playing and singing the song. Unfortunately being a library copy it was too scratched for us to listen to.
I brought this book thinking awesome its another like "The Wonky Donkey", anything like this the children will love! I also have found memories of this song from when i was a child and i remember my mum watching the topp twins whenever they were on tv and they were quite funny....
However i have to say i was quite disappointed as it wasn't quite what i expected or had hoped it would be. It is still a great story and the pictures in the book have created much more life to the story.
The Topp Twins have sung on the cd that accompanies the book, and have added goat bleats throughout. Beyond that, I wasn't quite as impressed with the CD as I thought I might have been - i don't know what i expected but as soon as i saw the Topp Twins i thought it would be a real laugh out loud funny story.
While its still a good book, awesome illustrations and an okay cd, it certainly doesnt captivate children's imaginations like some stories i know! I definitely wouldnt buy this as a present as its too risky whether a child would like it or not!
This song has always been one to make me smile, and the illustrations in the book add a lot of life and character to the lyrics. The expressions of exasperation on the duck, make this book worth reading, if nothing else!
The Topp Twins have sung this song onto a CD that accompanies the book, and have added goat bleats throughout. Beyond that, I wasn't quite as impressed with the CD as I thought I might have been - I expected more of the ducks exasperation to be sung, perhaps. Maybe because that's the way I read it (we read/sung it before we listened to the CD). But the Topp Twins have done a good job singing it, and the goat bleats certainly get the approval of my children.
It's a great song, awesome illustrations and well-sung CD. This book will be read and listened to many time to come in our house - my 3 year old sees the humour in the lyrics and pictures, and my 18 month old enjoys dancing to the catchy tune.
My daughter's daycare has gotten this book recently. I always try to arrive early to pick her up, so I can have a catch up with the teachers, see what she has been up to for the day etc. One thing I love, is arriving just on afternoon book time. They usually have books with the words on CD and they flip through singing the story together.
There's a Hole in my Bucket is no exception. I arrived the other day, to see them reading/singing through this wonderful book. The illustrations are so bright and fun. The CD was really catchy, and silly. I remember this story and song from my own childhood too.
Now every now and then, my daughter will break into song and we have a good sing along in the car - that's how catchy this book and song is! I'll definitely be looking out for this at our local book shop. So much fun!
I love this book! So did my children (who I think it was aimed at .....!!) The general comment of everyone I showed this book to was "I remember singing that at school!!" The Topp Twins have done a marvellous twist on the song "Theres a Hole in my Bucket" supported by the fantastic illustrations. I couldn't stop laughing.
The illustrations are just brilliant . They are glossy and very, very funny. I will definitely be looking out for more by Jenny Cooper. You will love reading this book and listening to the CD - as will your children.
I liked at the end of the book the blurbs about the Topp Twins and Jenny Cooper. It's nice to read a bit about the people that create marvellous books like this and I think it helps children understand a bit more about the process behind a book being in front of them.
A perfect 10/10 and a book not just to read to your children but also as a laugh for 'older' people in your life.
Buy it, Buy It, Buy It! It really is just fab!
