Christchurch Dreaming product reviews

Proud to promote NZ productsChristchurch Dreaming is a book full of optimism. It has been created by those who have known this region as home and is for people who love all that is great about Christchurch and Canterbury. In pictorial for, it takes the reader on a journey from its early years of establishment, through past tragedies overcome and triumphs celebrated. It shows the courageousness of Cantabrians who remained resolute after the recent earthquakes, and shares a vision for the future Christchurch.

The stunning imagery illustrates what Christchurch and Canterbury are still able to enjoy, and is combined with heartfelt messages from Cantabrians from all walks of life who openly share what they love about the people and their region, and their dreams for its future. It celebrated who we are and what we have.

Christchurch Dreaming also features exciting concepts for the new Christchurch from some of our most talented architects. They invite the reader to dream of the new options now available to Christchurch and Canterbury, and to also realize that nothing is impossible, for the positive spirit and determination that is so prevalent in Canterbury will turn those dreams into a reality.

Christchurch Dreaming - a New Zealand story, from the heart.

A beautifully photographed, moving tribute to Christchurch, past, present, and future, Mary Hobb's "Christchurch Dreaming" is a great coffee table book for all those who feel a special connection to the city.

I love that you can turn to any page and read a new short letter, often from a name you will recognize. Dan Carter, Steve Gurney, ex-mayor Garry Moore and many others are featured here, alongside interesting pieces on the history of the city, the earthquakes and the possible futures now open to us.

This book has a very upbeat feel to it, unlike some of the other earthquake related books on offer at the moment. My only criticism, which is also a strength, depending on your point of view, is that the letters from the contributors are so short - often two paragraphs or so. If you are wanting to leave a guest to browse while you make a cup of tea, then that's great, but if you want to read the book, these letters can seem a little vague and unconnected. I find myself wanting to know more about what Christchurch means to these people, how they experienced the recent upheaval and what they imagine it could look like in ten years time.

Still, Christchurch Dreaming certainly fulfils its promise to be a beautiful, coffee table style tribute to a city which has been through a lot recently. As a local, I appreciate the positive tone and sense of hope that radiates from every page. Definitely worth picking up your own copy for posterity.
