After encountering the Economy version from this supplier, I wasn't too sure this was going to pan out too well. After all, this version is more expensive, has a magnetic surface and a nice aluminium frame... but was it going to prove just as awkward to erase?
After running it through the usual battery of tests, I was very pleased to note that not only did this version not suffer the same 'residue' issues as the cheaper variety, but it greatly exceeded my expectations in all areas. I tried a variety of pens on it, ranging from the cheapest of the budget jobs from the 'dollar shops' through to high-end 'educational' grade pens designed to stand up to any abuse. Without exception, they all wiped clean off after 30sec, 5mins, 30mins, 2hrs, 1 day, 1 week and 2 weeks left on the board. No sprays, special wipes or hard effort required. A gentle drag of a cloth, a paper towel, and even my bare finger, was all it took to leave no trace behind.
The magnetic backing makes this ideal for project planning meetings, brainstorming sessions, even just attaching shopping lists and kids drawings. Honestly, I can't think of any situation that a board like this wouldn't be ideally suited for. The sturdy aluminium frame means that you can attach add-ons as you see fit: I used a small drillbit to bore a couple of holes around the edges and screw bulldog clips to the frame. It also means that 'unorthodox' methods of hanging this heavy board will succeed. Because of certain structural restrictions, I wasn't able to use the four supplied metal brackets to hang this board, so had to draw on the mighty powers of MacGyver to come up with a way to suspend the board for testing. In the end, I modified two of the brackets so that I could lock them into the upper groove of the frame, and hang the board from them. They, in turn, were screwed to the wall in such a manner as to secure the board there and prevent the clips from pulling loose. This has proved highly effective and is testament to the durable, quality construction of the board itself.
Overall, amazingly well built, highly durable materials and all-round professional design and construction has lead to an excellent product the company can be proud of. If you are on a tight budget, this may be what you want, but let's face it, you're not going to get it. But if a long-term investment in quality goods is on the cards, then this is certainly where you should aim your sights. If the money allows, don't settle for less than the very best - and aim for this design.
