Product reviews...
Wet shaving is coming back into fashion, with men binning their multi-bladed shaving systems and canned goo shaving creams and turning back double-edges and even straight razors. But more importantly, turning back towards shaving creams, shaving soaps instead of the generic goo in a can.
So, for a while now, I have been shaving with vintage Gillette razors and an array of shaving creams; but until now, never a soap. So when this soap arrived from Global Soaps, it was something I couldn't wait to try.
Once unwrapped, I was greeted by the wonderful fresh, spicy masculine smell. Nothing too girly or metrosexual here but enough of a smell to entice me to use the product.
I was lucky enough that the soap fitted perfectly into my vintage shaving mug. My brush was put into soak in a bowl of hot water, I then prepped my face.
The soap soon whipped up into lashing of rich lather that smelled fantastic, and felt very good when applied to the face. The lather gave a good cushion to protect your skin and good slip allowing the razor to glide over your face reducing the stubble.
The shave itself was sublime; and afterwards my face was as smooth as a baby's ..... Something I never acheived with the 'modern system'. My skin was smooth, felt moisturised and, well, damned good. My wife and daughter felt my shaven jowls and pronounced a fine shave! All in all, a fantastic product, and for the price and the length of time each bar will last, Global's Shaving soap will be excellent value for money.
As an aside, getting the best out of your soap may not be as straight-forward as it may seem, but it is far from complex. The following advice came from Badger and Blade, a website dedicated to wet shaving.
Firstly, you will need a shaving brush for this soap. You won't get the best effects of the soap if you don't have one. Global Soaps do have a Shaving kit which includes a shaving soap, brush and a pottery shaving bowl. Soak your brush in a bowl of hot water. Add some (1-2tsp) hot water to the top of the soap and leave it to soak for a while.
Empty your shaving bowl and shake out as much of the water from your brush as possible. Pour the water from the soap into your shaving bowl.
Charge the brush with the shaving soap until the soap seems dry and swirl in the shaving bowl.
Within a few turn you will have lashings of lather, but keep going a little longer until the bubbles are much smaller and it resembles whipped cream.
You will have plenty of soap for yourself and and if you have a partner, she may be interested in using the leftover lather for herself. Thankfully, my wife does not expect me to whip up some lather from a shaving soap whenever she wants to shave.
Practice does make perfect, but if you want perfection from a shave, Global's shaving Soap will give you superior results.
