Series Six continues the yarns into the '50s, as Herriot's (Christopher Timothy) practice expands and his home life with wife Helen (Lynda Bellingham) becomes more important to him. Yet the most unforgettable moments remain not only his treating of the sick animals of the Yorkshire countryside, but also the antics of the eccentric, hard-working residents of the county and his prickly partner, Siegfried Farnon (Robert Hardy).

I was a serious fan of James Herriot - both the books and the TV show. Actually, scratch that - I am STILL a serious fan of James Herriot, both the books and the TV Show - All Creatures Great and Small.
After all this time I still remember weekends were a time when Clan Diogenes were all sat around the TV awaiting the catchy theme tune that heralded the start of the show. And still, the theme tune brings back memories of roast dinners, coffee (or Hot chocolate) and wood smoke from the smouldering fire. Something I wish I could re-create for my daughter - but for some reason, this series doesn't capture her as much as it did (and still does) for me.
This show, as you can guess is 110% pure nostalgia on so many level. For my childhood, for a life that has all but disappeared of Herriot's 1950s Yorkshire, and a hark back to my farming life too. Even now, I still get a hankering to move back to England and get a few cows, a few pigs and a faithful dog at heel - a long way from Auckland.
James Herriot's world is really a hark-back to a less rushed time, nostalgia and empathy and pathos fill the show, but the sharpness of the writing and acting bring the story to life in a way that makes the show compulsive viewing, to me and the very many fans of Herriot.
I can only give this show straight 10s. It was my favourite then and remains a favourite now - even if my wife and my daughter are somewhat less than interested.
