Doctor Who - Voyage of the Damned product reviews

Kylie Minogue joins David Tennant in this spectacular action-packed DVD release, the first for the new fourth series. It comes complete with a host of fantastic extras including the 'Doctor Who Children In Need Special' and 'Doctor Who Christmas Confidential'.

Moments after leaving Martha Jones behind on present-day Earth the TARDIS collides with the bow of the Titanic. The Doctor quickly discovers that it isn't the famous ship, but a starship operated by an alien cruise line, currently enjoying a voyage to Earth to experience the Christmas holiday. On board The Doctor meets a waitress called Astrid Peth (Kylie Minogue). Together they battle against saboteurs and robotic angels armed with killer halos in an attempt to divert the Titanic's collision course with Earth.

It's a race against time as the Doctor and Astrid lead a small, brave and strange band of survivors throughout the devastated vessel. But can the Doctor get them all to safety in time?

Two of Britain's best-loved actors also join the cast; Geoffrey Palmer (As Time Goes By and Butterflies) plays the Captain of the Titanic and Clive Swift (Keeping Up Appearances) appears as Mr Copper, a tour guide aboard the Titanic.

I had to have a good giggle when the Doctor was trying to work out where the TARDIS has landed this time. At first I thought that they had actually landed on the deck of the Titanic and that the Doc might try and save the doomed ship as he does seem to have a inclination for trying to change history and save those who should have died. When the Doc said (something along the lines of) "where are we now?" I was heard to remark "you have just hit an ice burg and are going down" but then you realise that it is an airship and not the famous ship.

Really love the way David Tennant uses his cheeky smile and humour to play the Doctor. He is joined by a good supporting cast and you kind of got the idea that he had a soft spot for Astrid who was instantly recognisable as Kylie Minogue.

I really enjoyed this episode as I rather like the history and theories behind the real Titanic and thought that it was going to be a wonderful story. Poor London really has to learn that strange things seem to happen to them at Christmas (not sure I would be looking forward to Christmas with all that keeps happening around that time of year).

I would recommend that anyone watching not take the evens of the episode too seriously but then it is hard to take it that seriously when you include aliens and air ships that are named after a famous ship on earth but they have no idea why the Titanic is so famous.

You know, I had to laugh at one bit in the movie where The Doctor is standing in the middle of London on Christmas Eve, and the place is empty except for a newspaper vendor in his kiosk. Doc asks "Where is everybody?" and the vendor replies "Are you kidding? it's Christmas mate, they've all left town!" - Every year London is in extra-terrestrial trouble... alien invaders, explosions, infestations, you name it... and The Doc can't even refute it, because, sure enough, it's Christmas and London is under siege from space again... only this time, it's all of Earth that could go 'pop' and vanish.

Again, David Tennant shows why he is rapidly becoming my favourite 'Doctor'... the dry wit and cheeky grin, that style and elan that just gives him a style unbeaten by any previous Doctor... mind you, each 'incarnation' brings something new and wonderful to the figure that is "Doctor Who".

It was funny to see Kylie Minogue making an appearance... she's been so quite for the last few years I thought she had fallen off the charts and safely into oblivion... but no, here she is, and it seems to have helped her climb back into the charts and industry eyes again. Funny how that happens, eh.

Overall, quite a good story, the usual excellent special effects, and a charming and somewhat touching death scene at the end for Ms. Minogue. Another welcome addition to any Doc fan's collection.
