I was given a Tolo Toys Shape Sorter Play Bench by a friend whose children had outgrown it. It has now gone through at least four children and still looks like new. Other than the string all the other pieces are plastic so it is easy to clean after baby has been chewing on it.
Each of the shapes are different shapes and colours. They can be removed (unfortunately one shape never wants to stay in the bench) and used as shakers. They each have a slightly different sound too.
It can also be used as a basic hammering activity. You simply hammer the shape through and then turn it over and hammer it back. I did find the string was a little short but I think that Tolo may have had to have it less than a certain length in order to meet safety standards.
My children have enjoyed using it. When they were very young they would roll the shape along the floor and listen to it. Today the children keep it with the musical instruments and because there a six shapes there are always plenty of shakers to go around.
It is expensive to buy but The Tolo Shape Sorter Bench is definitely built to last.
This toy has been a real favourite in this household. To start with I thought that the shapes were a little advanced for my 16 month old but after a few days she had it figured out!!! The only thing I would change about this one is the length of the string that attaches the hammer to the bench, it's just a little short. It's very durable (after being banged against the marble floor several times, quite hard, it is still surviving!!) Once again, really nice but simple colours that arent too "in your face". Very much something that I would purchase as a gift for nieces etc.
