Really enjoyed the flavour of this one a lot. It was smooth, full, but not overpowering. I had a friend over for lunch, so I swerved it over some Uncle Ben's Golden Vege rice for something a little different. We both really enjoyed the smooth rich curry and the subtle pops of flavour from the potato chunks and very impressive hunks of lamb.
The sauce was thin enough that it didn't feel like I was chewing on soup, but thick enough to stick to the rice and come away clean from the plate, making for very easy rinsing of the dishes and no need to soak them. The potato was cooked to perfection, firm without being raw, but still able to fall apart in my mouth to release the infused flavours.
My only little gripe was that I got a packet of curry that had a small chunk of lamb bone in it. Sure, these things are very rare in this day and age, but it was still a tiny blemish on an otherwise spotless record for Kaweka. But don't let that put you off... I have eaten a LOT of the Kaweka stuff, and this is the first time I have ever encountered this, so the odds are TINY... so if you enjoy good, tasty, easy food, then you should be stuffing your pantry or cupboards full of this stuff!
After eating quite a few Kaweka curries in a matter of a few days, I should be sick of them, but I'm not!
As usual, easy as cooking instructions, microwave and it's ready. We shared this between two of us for a lunch meal, there was plenty.
This meal looked great with the chunks of potato, and there was plenty of big chunks of lamb (love that). The colour was very nice, it looked very authentic. I really liked the flavour of this curry, it was a bit spicy, but not too spicy. It was a nice heat. The potatoes were in small bite size chunks, and like the lamb, had been infused with the sauce. Very very moreish!
I have to say I am REALLY liking the meal for one addition of the rice. Maybe the bigger packs could start including rice too?
Apart from that, this was a really enjoyable curry... maybe even good enough to serve to your in-laws! They'd never know :)
The short version: Seriously yummy!
The long version: A delicate, yet flavoursome curry sauce, delicate, melt-in-your-mouth chunks of prime NZ lamb, and flavour-infused potato... though I think some kumara would have gone down well too. -hint hint-
With curries like this, where the sauce is thinner, I usually prefer to serve it with macaronni cheese, especially when I throw in a knob of top-grade garlic butter... and so I did with this one... and I think it's an excellent combination. The mac cheese binds with the curry sauce, thickening it so that it sticks to the food... and it really does make a difference.
Overall, this is an excellent addition to the mighty, 16-strong Kaweka range of heat'n'eat foods. This could also be a good one to trial in their new Meal for 1 range of meals.
Ask anyone and they'll tell you one thing I really love is a good curry, and this is a good curry.
For this meal I decided to go with the standard curry fare, rice and naan bread, so I threw some rice in the steamer and placed a couple of slices of naan under the grill for a quick heat, and then served it all up, it was as good as it smelt.
The lamb was, as I have come to expect from Kaweka, nice and tender, so much so that they seem to melt in your mouth.
The other ingredients, such as the potato and the Thai herbs and spices, made this Kaweka meal one of my all time favourites, so much so that I will be making sure that there are plenty of these in the cupboard for when I feel a little bit peckish.
