Maketu Pies, made in the Bay of Plenty, and distributed to fine food outlets, for you to enjoy.
More than your average Sausage Roll, by far.
Product reviews...
I grabbed a Whoppa Roll for lunch today from the supermarket. It was heated in the deli section of the supermarket next to the hot chickens and some other Maketu products. The Whoppa Roll grabbed my eye as none of the pies sounded nice to me for the day. I picked one up and it was packaged in a cardboard box, with plenty of information on the box. It had a bit of a spiel about the history of the company, a list of ingredients, nutrional information and all the branding.
The box itself is a sleeve or pillow style box, with flip out ends to open and re-close. I don't tend to like these as I always trap my fingers trying to close them. But the box also had a perforated part to rip it open half way up the side. I thought that was clever. Once home, I opened the box and got to eating. The pastry was golden and flaky as promised. What I found was it was really quite thick for a sausage roll but not greasy or too flaky. When I looked at the pastry join, it was really well sealed together and not falling apart. The ends were obviously a really high quality pastry because of the obvious thick straight-edge to the cut.
The meat filling was flavourful, with a great balance of herbs and spices. I loved that this is largely meat, and I didn't have to fight my way through hundreds of slimy bits of chopped onion as I ate as well. In my opinion this beats my local bakery's sausage rolls hands down.
Unfortunately for me, this was another disappointing product from Maketu. Although the pastry still lived up to its usual tasty standard, and yes, it was reasonably filling for a "sausage roll" (which was kinda expected considering its size), I found the taste to be rather bland and definitely rather... lacking.
Worth the money spent on it in size value, but not worth going after a second one.
The hard working team at Maketu Pies have another wonderous product they have been hiding... the Whoppa Roll.
This is a SERIOUS sausage roll, at 190g+, it has to be one of the largest, most fully packed sausage rolls I have ever smothered in Watties Sauce and eaten with a crisp fresh salad.
Not only is it far more filling then your run-of-the-mill piddly saussy roll, it's flavour is something different, more meaty and less oniony then many I have tried.
Their usual exceptional-quality pastry and a real good hunk of sausage meat make this good eatin' by any standards.
Overall, "Please Sir, can I have some more?"
