"You are pursued by the shadows of death, girl. The weight you will carry is more than any mortal should bear. But bear it you must."
Meg Farmer doesn't believe in magic, and she certainly doesn't believe that she has inherited the Blessing, despite her mother's best hopes and prayers. But when an ancient sliver of amber reveals the truth, Meg's life is changed forever. She is called to the city to be trained as a Seer - against the wishes of those who think a woman should be kept from such knowledge.

This is the first of Shillitoe's books that I've tried, and it had me - hook, line and sinker - from the first chapter onwards!! In a fantasy realm that has a rather strong Australian flavour to it, it is easy to get lost in the story of Meg Farmer as she slowly learns that magic DOES really exist, and that she has more power than even the Seers she later has to deal with. With her faithful dingo Sunfire, and pet bush rat Whisper, constantly at her side, Meg's world is turned upside down as she becomes an unwilling tool in the war between Queen Sunset and her son Future. This causes her to face the brutality of war, the heavy responsibility that comes with power (and the death it brings), and the loss of loved ones time and time again- yet her strong and somewhat feisty spirit refuses to wane.
This was a very difficult book to put down, and the moment I finished the last page, I was already heading to the bookcase to grab out my copy of the next in the series A Solitary Journey. It looks like I will be adding Tony Shillitoe to my list of authors to collect, and if you haven't already tried his books and enjoy the fantasy genre, I suggest you give them a go!
