Product reviews...
Since having children, I have found that I quite enjoy baking, while living at home when I was younger I had no desire to learn how to bake - much to the frustration of my parents. Nowadays I especially like to make and decorate cupcakes and cookies. My eldest son in particular has developed a love for creating in the kitchen, and at 5 years old I am definitely encouraging this. He has informed me that when he grows up, he will be a dad and a fantastic baker. I am constantly on the lookout for products that can help minimize the chaos in the kitchen while baking with 3 young helpers. I had not heard of Dr. Oetker products until I saw them on the KIWIreviews website, after trying several of the different products this brand quickly became my go-to for decorating needs.
With Christmas approaching ridiculously fast, the children decided they wanted to bake and decorate cookies for their teachers and our neighbours. I instantly popped onto the Countdown website to see if there was a product to take some of the decorating stress away. I saw the Dr. Oetker White Designer Icing which comes with 4 different nozzles and it sounded ideal. The nozzles include a writing nozzle, ribbon nozzle, petal nozzle, and a star nozzle.
The children decided that they would be creating reindeer and people cookies, so off we went to purchase the necessary ingredients. We ended up purchasing a few extra Dr. Oetker products including some coloured writing icing pens. Once we had baked the cookies and let them cool down for a while, it was time to start the creative decorating session.
The Designer Icing pouch is very distinctive, and there is no mistaking that it is part of the Dr. Oetker with it's bright coloured packet. The pouch is a generous 140g in size, and the serving suggestion on the front shows a cookie decorated like a pretty flower. When it came time to use the icing pouch the directions said to knead the pouch well before using, or to alternatively place in some warm water to soften. I chose to knead the pouch and was surprised that it was easy, quick, and effective, after a very short time we were ready to start. The children decided that out of the 4 nozzles, they thought the writing one would be best for drawing faces etc on people. I decided to also decorate some cookies, the icing flowed easily from the pouch with minimal squeezing, once on the cookie the icing became hard in a short time, this was ideal with the large amount that we had to decorate.
We managed to decorate two batches of cookies (about 40 cookies) and still have approximately half the pouch leftover, the directions state not to refrigerate.
I personally love this product and we now have an excessive stockpile in the pantry for the not so distant future. I loved that this is easy to use, no messy dishes to wash from making a batch of icing, and it tastes delicious - I may have squeezed some onto a spoon and tried it (don't judge me hehe.) I noticed on the Dr. Oetker website they also have a Designer Icing in pink colour available.
This product is a must have for anyone decorating baked goods with young children, or anyone that wants a quick, hassle-free way of decorating, I look forward to using this to make more creations!
