Product reviews...
I loved that we were picked to review "Supermum". First off the hard cover really appeals to me, they are somewhat considered more luxurious than your standard soft-cover book. Keepsakes. I love that the Mum looks in love with the child on the cover. My son asked if it was him jumping to me, very cute!
I enjoyed the fact that the book displays many different animals and their mums as well as qualities most Mums have. There are many instances where a Mum is in a situation where she must be brave, kind amongst many other things. This book really highlighted that and reassured me I was too a Super Mum albeit in my own way. It also showed that there are many different kinds of Mums but that there were many attributes they shared.
Mr Four enjoyed the illustrations and used the words to point out times I was fun, brave or kind. It was a great bonding experience. We also both pointed out the different fonts that were displayed throughout the book which made reading more fun! Supermum kept Mr4 interested and engaged throughout. It is a fun family story to add to our library! This would make a great gift for a baby shower or a newborn.
The cover of the book "SuperMum", along with the title, attracted me to it. I love the way that the mum is looking up adoringly at the child. The purple colour also stood out and I appreciated the fact it had a hard cover. There is something special about holding a hard cover book to share with a child. I acknowledge that it would bump the price of a book up a bit but I would much prefer to buy a hard cover book as a gift for a child than a soft cover one.
When Mr Six looked at the front cover he thought that it looked like there was someone who in danger and a mum is being super and rescuing that person. He also thought that it could be a mum doing the things that the child really likes and and she can lift things up in the air, for example the child. Miss Four was just excited that the book was about a mum.
My kids, like many kids, love to read books about their mum! As we read the book, Mr Six kept reflecting on ways that I was like the supermum in the book. I kind of like being thought of as a supermum!! Mr Six stated that "supermum reminds me of how my mum is so super. I love my mum because she is so strong". It was so nice that the book inspired such comments from my son. He also compared to me being "like an octopus... that she can do lots of things quickly".
The book goes through many traits that mums display and how they might resemble the good qualities of many different animals. It shows the way children might see their mothers. It also is a chance to remind all the mums out there that they do an amazing job and that we are all super in the eyes of our children. Even when we think we are doing a bad job, our kids still see the fact that we have super powers. Both my kids now understand what 'porky pies' are and they know that they are not allowed to tell porky pies in our house - Mummy will always know if they do!
There is a good use of white space to go with the illustrations and text in the book. The font is varied and interesting. We liked the fact that the words had some creativity to them and the font, style and direction of the text reflected the words that were being used. For example, 'X-ray vision' is written in the book in a dotted font. This demonstrated the idea of seeing through something.
The end of the book was lovely and the kids enjoyed giving me extra special super hugs. Miss Four snuggled up to me as soon as I mentioned hugs. Mr Six said that it reminded him of hugging me. "My mum is super because she give super cuddles".
