I loved having the chance to review this book and from the moment I opened it with my toddler she was glued. Normally she will lose focus within a minute (if that) but she sat still the entire book and talked to me about all the pictures.
I love how it is about animals so it is easy for a younger reading audience i.e toddlers to work out what is going on as they can point out and talk about the animals. The illustrations are just amazing so bright, clear and eye catching they draw you in from the minute you pick up the book and open it.
My toddler found it hard to get the letters out without my help so I would say its better suited for an older age group maybe 4+ but this didn't stop her from asking me "help letter out mumma" when she wanted it out. The lift the flaps went down a treat and were always met with clapping from my toddler or a gasp of excitement. We got to the end and loved how it gave you an extra piece of paper where you can write your own Mum a letter which is quite special.
All in all an amazing book, the illustrations are beautiful and it kept my toddler focused the entire story. Since the book has arrived I would say we have read it at least 2-4 times a day it is her new favourite! Thanks KIWIreviews and scholastic. I have already taken it into my work (daycare) and discussed how they need this amazing book in their library!
As a mother I really loved reading Dear Mum, I Love You. It gave me a really warm really reading it with my daughters (5 and 6.5 years old) snuggled up on the couch either side of me. Although I am always telling them how much I love them I don't hear it from them as much. This book encouraged them to express their love for me.
The cover makes it look like it is a book for toddlers but it is really best suited for your four to six year olds as it has letters hidden in envelopes that are a bit fiddly to get out and would easily to be for a toddler to rip the envelope or lose the letter. I doubt many school or public libraries will have a copy of this book as it would soon be ruined. It is a book to cherish with your child rather than have them read by themselves.
This story also has some puns that adults will get but will so over most children's heads. The girls did looks at me a bit strangely when I laughed a parts they didn't think were funny. This is a sign that they well enjoy the book for many years to come. They did find both the illustrations and some of the letters funny especially when the cheetah cub promised not to cheat.
There is also a special page at the end of the book that has a blank letter where you can write a letter to your mum. Since I have two girls I will be getting a couple of nice pieces of writing paper so they can each write their own letter. If you were getting this as a gift for Mothers' Day it would be a lovely surprise if your child had already written the letter before gifting (Hint, hint fathers).
Thank you KIWIreviews and Scholastic books for this lovely book.
